Posted - 04/23/2007 : 08:20:17 AM I can't believe I am starting this thread off.
Amazing night. TR adds so much to Dave's music, hearing him last night was unbelievable. TR played You Are My Sanity, which is one of my all TIMe favorite songs. I do, however remember, why I am not fond of going to DMB shows. Yep people called out all through the show. I was expecting a more respectful crowd, not the typical DMB crowd, but that is what it was....except for a special group of TIM fans, the members of this board! Tim was well represented. I had a blast with all of you!
Dirtysloth drove up from VA to see the show. He drove to my house, then I drove to NYC. My coworkers told me it would be "NO Problem" driving to Manhattan on a Sunday, well, I really have some words for them when I see them tomorrow, LOL! I almost killed Patrick and myself a couple of times.
First we no more than got on the NJ turnpike than we got in bumper to bumper traffic. After an hour or so, it began to move a little. Traffic was horrible and I had no clue where I was going, just following directions from mapquest. Well, good old mapquest failed to mention that the turnpike splits in two parts with signs saying something like Exits 15W-19W and 15E and 19E. I couldn't see the signs until the last minute because of the vehicles ahead of me and I of course took the wrong one, nearly killing us in the process. I finally got to the end and the toll booth, again, crawling bumper to bumper to be told I just have to take the George Washington Bridge and then the Hudson Pkwy. Only 8 miles. Great....until I go about a half mile only to stop again, yep, bumper to bumper traffic at a snails pace...a very slow snail!
So we finally made our way over the bridge, again with choices, upper or lower level, and got on to the Hudson Pkwy which was moving along pretty well, for about 1/4 mile! Yep, another bumper to bumper snail pace mess. I finally see the sign for a street close to RCMH and get in the left lane for that turn when I look in my rear view mirror only to find a police van about 4 cars in back of me. So, I go over, although people weren't eager to let anyone in and the police van passes me. The traffic behind the police of course were sailing through so as soon as that side slowed down to wait for someone to move out of the way of the police, I gave the woman next to me my saddest puppy dog face and asked if I could pull in front of her. She let me in and off we went.
So my friends were right, Manhattan on a Sunday was VERY easy to drive around in. They just didn't tell me it would take a whole friggin five hours to get there! (should take 1 1/2-2 hours tops)
We found a place a few blocks away to park which was the good news, the bad news is I lost my prescription glasses getting out of my car. They must have fallen when I was taking my car keys off my key ring for the attendant. I realized shortly after we started walking that I didn't have them and just assumed they were in the car. Nope. Oh well, small price to pay for a great night!
For the Dave fans, I forget the order and all the songs but he played Crush and Two Step (two of my favorites) but I am sure you can get the set list off his sites. There was a lot of Dave Speak, stories of a soldier who was sent off to Iraq and was in a hummer that got shot by a missile and left him with brain damage. I guess because he had some prior medical conditions the army didn't want to pay for his medical care, complete rubbish. (the Army, not Dave's story!)
He talked about being a boy, a boyish man or a manish boy, and I think he said a womanish boy at one point, LOL Crazy things, he was funny.
The TIMe flew by. They said goodnight and I thought no way, and I looked at the time and it was 10:19! They came back for two encores, beautiful music. I just can't say how much TR added to the music. He will always be on the top of my favorite artist list!
I just have to end by saying that while last night was euphoric, I still prefer to see TR in the small venues. I would take Star Hill in VA, or any of the venues I have seen him perform in over RCMH any day!
Tim, thanks for an awesome evening!

Posted - 04/27/2007 : 07:43:53 AM Thanks for posting on the other side Fluffy, Patrick emailed me too so I can relax now. Yep, I am just an old worrying mom who likes to know all the board members are safe. Some things will never change, LOL.
Great review Patrick! I forgot to mention that TR played Betrayal. I just keep reviewing that show over and over in my mind and I still can't get over how great TIM sounded. Not that I didn't know he plays a mean guitar, but the "delux" speakers etc, really picked up his tones and he was simply amazing!
I too am disappointed that Erich left. Never thought things would work out the way they did. bummer
Dave, my best to you opening for TR next week. Remember, you promised to send me good vibes for my "Radicalism" final. I need all the help I can get,LOL. Will I be seeing you and Jared at the North Star Bar? Hope so. My kids will be there too.

Posted - 04/26/2007 : 02:14:53 AM Would've posted earlier, but it's taken me this long to recover. Actually not quite even, but one more good night's rest and I'll be back to normal. Counting the TIMe I spent as a passenger with Pam, I traveled over 1000 miles through seven states in about 44 hours having only 3-5 hours of sleep three nights in a row and drove straight to work in Roanoke, VA from Philly for a ten hour shift.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat. This will always be one of my favorite concert experiences ever.

Show Notes: Dave And Tim appear on all songs except where noted * Tim Solo + Dave On Piano ~ Dave Solo
Despite our troubles, I thought we were just in time after picking up tickets at will call as Dave was talking and they started playing Stay or Leave. Oh well. It's hard to be disappointed after how the rest of the night went. I didn't even realize we missed a couple of songs until I looked at this setlist. The audience was pretty unruly, but Dave and Tim were pretty rockin' so it was annoying, but definitely didn't ruin it for me. Hopefully most of that doesn't turn up in the mix for the DVD. Well, if it did it's hard to imagine there'd be one. I'm not sure when it was, maybe when Dave was talking about the war, but for the first TIMe all night the audience was pretty quiet and then some dumb bitch yelled at the top of her lungs "FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORTYYY OOOOOOONEEEEE!!!!!". Not appropriate in any case, but especially when being lucky enough to be at this concert, with over 35.000 requests being made to the fan club I heard, how can you be so disrespecful? As Dave said, "If you feel like screaming, just sit on your hands and cover your mouth."
Anyway, as far as the music goes, some of my favorite moments were: DDTW when Tim drops that low D down another octave with the delay pedal - had the whole place rumbling. The slide solo in crush. Well, really all the solos in the classic DMB songs. Dave's vocals shined all night too as mentioned in the previous review. I especially enjoyed his singing during Ayhee? I don't know the names of some of the newer songs. The one where Tim is doing some kind of walkdown in octaves is the one I speak of here. And as mentioned before, the TIMe FLEW by. I couldn't believe I never even felt like stretching my legs during a nearly three hour set. Then again I guess I did that during the many standing ovations.
It was awesome to finally meet Matthews. I just told him he was a big influence on me, snapped a pic with him, and thanked him. I'll post the pic when I figure out how to get it from my phone to the computer. If someone can help me with that, shoot me a message.
The real highlight was definitely meeting other board members for the first TIMe and hanging out. Like Erich - I think the first time we traded boots had to be about seven years ago or close to it. I know it was before we started using this board. And all the rest - can't wait to meet again someTIMe.
Whenever I get this high from an experience, it inspires me musically. So I'll probably be posting a little music video or something pretty soon.
That's all I have for now.

Posted - 04/26/2007 : 12:41:55 AM I know the feeling Jared. Time is something I don't have much of. I am just killing some time now waiting for the printer to print out my book report for class tomorrow night.
Fluffy, I am glad you posted that review from the other message board. I too can't wait for others to write their reviews, right now my brain is fried and I am just trying to make it through finals week next week.
I must say it was fun to see Dave at the piano, but still, what I remember most is how great TR was! The way he made that guitar sing sent chills up and down my spine! Really nice to see him so happy! |

I write like a 4 year old, but I will make one up later tonight.
This will be huge for TR. I can't wait to see what happens. His music is so inspiring it's unreal. What a time, and damn what a show. |

Posted - 04/25/2007 : 2:59:39 PM If memory serves it was recorded in '96 and released in Jan of '99 so it was recorded more than 10 years ago but it's anniversary as a release hasn't hit the 10 year mark yet. Hard to imagine that that much TIMe has gone by. Guess TIMe flys when you are having fun. LOL
Also, I am still waiting for some personal reviews of this performance from some folks I know were there. Don't make me name names. LOL So many highlights, like a spontaneous YAMS, Dave on piano for the first TIMe, 2 encores, yet no reviews from TR fans. What gives? |

Posted - 04/25/2007 : 12:44:40 AM To everyone who attended this show, it really sounds like it was a historic performance, one that I'm glad was recorded. Pam, despite the mess you had getting there, I'm so glad you got tix and enjoyed the show. I hope they rush this release out similar to how Fenway, and Vegas came out very quickly. I bet this will introduce TR to a whole new group of people, much in the way that Luther College did back in the late 90's. Was that really almost 10 years ago????? |

I want to see lengthy reviews from all involved. THANX!)
more of an in depth revue..i was a little drunk last night and just typed some blurbs so hopefully this will spawn some memories and help those that were not there, live the experience!!!
As i found my seat in the orchestra section row WW, handicap due to a recent hip surgery, i was surprisingly anxious. I had a bag full of posters promised to friends and a cold beer in my hand. The back drop was interesting. Two chairs for Dave and Tim and a small table with a few bottles of water on it. behind that, was a giant clock (prop) and a giant circle shape, used for reflection of light and broadcasting images on them to match the scenes depicted by gobos( atechnical term for stencils put into lights to project an image) on the brick wall behind them. Among those thing listed, a ladder, a few truss's a "caution pit" sign and a bunch of clutter adorned the stage behind dave and Tim. The took the stage at 7:55, even though half of the theater was still finding their seat. The opened with a typical Bartender, but with a chilling intro that really set the stage. dave walked out with a thermus full of tea, which was identified by the strings that hold the tea bags hanging over the edge of the mug. After Bartender, Dave introduced MONK the guitar tech as a "a guy that tunes his guitar. I never do anything different with each song that I play, I just do everything the same but since Monk tunes the guitar it make each song unique. Don't get to close to me, it is still cold and flu season and I have a fever. i don't know if it's nerves or what but I was singing like a bird until i came out here. maybe it is nerves, but I'm all husky. I guess 'll just have to go with." This lead into a huge uproar from the fas, a nice segue into When the world ends, which ended with the classic dave and Tim extension after " when the world is over we'll just be be.... giinnning" (beautiful). Though it seemed as though the crowd was still finding their seat, it soon came apparent that NYC Dave and Tim fans are very restless. they NEVER STOPPED GETTING OUT OF THEIR SEATS AND MOVING AROUND. THE ENTIRE SHOW. but that did not stop dave from going into Stay or Leave. However, that song did not start until Dave told the crowd " Tim and I rarely get to play wiht eachother anymore so as you can see wiht all the cameras flying around, we are taping tonight...most likely for a dvd. I'll have to put a tagline on the dvd about my husky voice." song after song, one could not tell Dave's voice was strained. each song was filled with crescendo's and falsettos that tore the roof down. well either they tore the roof down or NYC fans are always just that loud. On to Gravedigger, Dave told the cookie cutter story about the soldier before going into a chilling Gravedigger, which immediately = a bathroom break for all of the obvious tools in the audience. Amazingly though, D&T kept their composure and went into a beautiful rendition of the maker but not before telling the audience " You know all you menish-boys and boyish-men out there that are screaming like this (screams in deep voice) are only screaming like that because they can't scream like this (screams like a girl)."--hilarious Dave then went on to tell us that ODH was a song about him and his sister helped him to that conclusion...and the show went on Dave then told an incredible story about visiting a tribe In south Africa that sang songs without words, and one of the tribe members literally reached into the blazing fire they were sitting around and "ate the fire" -Dave motions with his hands what it looks like to eat fire, crowd laughs again. he then told us that while walking on the beach with his daughters, he was coming up with a song to explain that experience and among his thoughts and his "daughter hitting him in the head while they were walking" Ayhee was born..so he played it! in conclusion dave said" sometimes you have to do something a little bit different." Tim then provoked a moving Betrayal, which did not appease most of the rude NYC fans, for the majority of the orchestra section got up and left. It was around this time that a high school couple sat right in front of my sister and i and continued to make out the entire rest of the show, and record many of the songs on his camera. Dave then joined Tim back on stage, but this time, for the first time...ever....Dave sat behind a piano. Call me crazy, but I thought he was getting ready to play Butterfly or blackbird, but sure enough, amidst all the screaming fans beggin for "41" the tempo suddenly changed, and Out of My Hands was unleashed for the first time since 9/11/05...and first time ever D&T...it was beautiful and very cool. Dave then told the story of being on House with hugh laurie and he told us that "no he did not play the piano parts, he is not that good" he then tol a hilarious story of having a "growling stomach" during the taping so they had to take many cuts during the scenes of dave lying in a hospitol bed. one of the cameramen fell asleep and dave was glad for the "focus went away from him and his growling stomach" Still water ---> don't drink the water followed. then Dave told us that the next song was about his grandfather that faught apartheid in NORTH Africa...the song he was talking about, surprisingly was OH... Monk then brought out the country brass guitar and Cornbread filled the air..still, the annoying fans would not sit still in there seats and had to keep moving, and scream out songs ( who are these people and is anyone a contract killer here on ants?) It seemed as if Dave was forced to play crash which amazingly caused this really nerdy cool guy with no friends to dance obnoxiously in the aisles "This next song is by Daniel Lanois" and still water graced radio city Music Hall..a chilling rendition with superimposed images of a river on the brick wall behind dave and Tim. Dave then gave the stage to TIMMY and he played a very emotion filled/ sfx filled you are my sanity. reminded me of the good old days when they use to play that at every show..you can find an old incredible rendition of it from the recording of the show dedicated to the memory of Anne Sister followed and Dave told the cookie cutter story of how "when he was young my sister and i thought that maybe someone put my heart into her and her heart into me and that makes sense in a line of the song." MY SISTER nearly cried during the incredible version, though we still had to block out annoying screaming fans the BOOM LIOG and the whole crowd jumped out of their seats and started dancing and boy did Tim really shine, i can not wait to see the DVD footage of that song, it was incredible last night and for the first time since 1999, D&T walked off the stage, closing the initial set with a crowd favorite. 10:30 and we anxiously awaited the encore, but it sure did seem early for the show to end. Dave walked out with the electric, jammed a little, and played a very powerful some devil and the crowd sang along with him "Too drunk and still drinkinggggg" Tim then joined dave and the played a perfect fitting Grace is Gone and then closed the show with an energy filled Nancies. tey then left the stage... and so did a lot of people..but the lights hadn't come on and the crowd was roaring. they came back. THEY CAME BACK! and played the song everyone was screaming at them all night. A beautiful #41 tha MADE THE SHOW..the outro was incredible as well, i'll call it the "rain outro" two step then closed and the whole audience sang in unison...dave and Tim then exited and Dave grabbed his head with his hand as if someone else was pulling him off stage...beautiful show A+ plus the fans B+ show..too bad such an incredible show, which they taped, where Dave sounded great, and Tim sounded better then ever. pulling out old favorites and jamming new ones. Everythign from covers, to LIOG closers, to a amazing #41 second encore face melt....the DVD is much anticipated!!! |

Words can't even describe the amount of soul Tim put into his performance last night. He was incredible and the entire place gave him a standing ovation. It was an important moment for guitar players everywhere that he played a solo acoustic song and got a standing over from 6,000+. |
