Where to begin.........

So it has been absolutely CRAZY for me, the last few weeks. After finishing TR's last run of shows it was off to NYC to do a quick 2 week run with a band called El Perro Del Mar from Sweden. That tour took me from NYC to Boston to Montreal to Toronto to Chicago to Minneapolis to Seattle to Portland to San Francisco to LA where we had the last 2 shows with EPDM. The next day LA to Austin for a gig at SXSW with Keren Ann. Next day, back to NYC. 8,500 miles in 14 days thru some of the worst weather conditions I have ever had to drive in. Oh, and YES, I did all that DRIVING. Next day, NYC to DC for less than 24 hours at my home, the first TIMe I have seen my home and my bed since November. Next day, DC to Santa Fe. Next day, Santa Fe to Telluride. Ahhhh, Telluride, absolutely beautiful! But it is safe to assume I was wrecked. Although seeing TR and his excitement for this run of shows really rejuvenated me. Keep in mind, he was a tad burnt as well as he had just returned from Europe with Dave. Immediately upon his return did a benefit in Santa Fe and then a few daze to ready himself for his SOLO run of shows starting in Telluride. He was quite excited for his return to Telluride. He had been there a couple of TIMes with Johnny and Houston on TR3 TouRs but he hadn't been there since his run of SOLO opener shows with Govt Mule. On that trip the Govt Mule bus got stuck in a dip in the road while pulling a trailer and TR told a hilarious story about all of them actually getting off the bus and trying to push it out. Like any number of them could have actually made a difference trying to push a Prevost and trailer. LOL Anyway, it was great to hear the story and see TR beam as he remembered his last stop in Telluride with The Mule.

Cut to present day and our arrival. After a fairly uneventful drive from Santa Fe we found that our prospected route became a mystery. Our plan was to shoot up 550 to CR-8 and cut over to Ophir, CO with a quick shot into Telluride. Sadly, we never found CR-8. Let me clarify, we found where CR-8 should be. We found the sign for CR-8 and for Ophir but no sign of the actually road. Hmmmmmmm? Where is the road? We never did see anything that even looked like a road anywhere near the sign for CR-8 & Ophir. All we could assume was that it was completely snowed out. Nary a sign of the road at all. So we had to shoot up to the next available road and come around and drop down into Telluride. Only added about hour to our trip but an hour is an hour. We arrived just after midnite, checked into ski chalet and began to get settled. TR realized he had left all his spare strings in the studio and he was bummed. We set about making calls to his home to have them locate them and overnite them to us in Denver. In the meanTIMe we had to figure out something in the event that we didn't receive them since it was a weekend. Now take it from me, it is not ez to find the strings TR uses. I don't think we have ever gone in a music store and actually had them tell us they have them in stock. Generally a store in Santa Fe special orders them for him. So the prospect of having to locate his unique strings is not always something I feel overly confident about. I did have a positive vibe that if there was a place that might have a unique enuf music or guitar shop that would carry them it was gonna be in place like Telluride(keep in mind, Telluride is only 6 blocks long, not a BIG city) that hosts some of the most amazing bluegrass festivals in the country. After arranging with TR's household to overnite the strings to Denver all I need to do was locate enuf to get us thru until the Denver gig. I looked in the phone book and there were only 3 music stores listed. Only 2 seemed to suit our needs. The winner being Telluride Music Co. run by a luthier by the name of Dave Lamb. This seemed like if there was gonna be a place, this would be the place. Sure enuf, after a quick phone call to Dave, he assured us he had exactly what we were looking for. TR was amazed as he has never had anyone tell him "yeah! we have those in stock." So we decided to head over and pick them up just before our on-air interview on KOTO-FM at 4pm.

We arrived at the venue, loaded in and met up with Mike from the venue who was gonna walk us over to the station for the interview. He also asked if we minded if a friend of his tagged along to video the event. Of course we said "No, not at all." At which point we were introduced to Ron, our videographer for the evening. Ron followed us to the radio station shooting everything, even our stop at the local coffee shop. We arrived at KOTO to find a community radio station full of vinyl records and an amazing friendly staff. The DJ's are all volunteers and can play WHATEVER they want. Very KEWL! TR did a brief interview and played 3 songs live on the air. Betrayal, The Truth and one other that the name escapes me at the moment. The footage Ron shot should shed some lite on the title of the 2nd song played. It was a hysterical interview with TR rambling about all things crazy and also divulging some insight into his craft(No, not his "spacecraft"). Everyone had a great TIMe and we all decided it was the kewlest radio station we had ever been to. They also played a couple of songs from Parallel Universe during the segment as well. TR also did a station ID for them before we left to head back to the Sheridan for soundcheck.

Cut to the Sheridan Opera House. Enuf cannot be said about this venue. Absolutely beautiful! In all respects. It is said to be one of the most acoustically perfect rooms in the country and it was built in 1913. A brief history of the place.....The Sheridan has seen more movie premieres than any other theater in the country including LA and NYC. It is the original home of the Telluride Film Festival and opened 1 year before the movie "Birth of a Nation". It's safe to assume that this room has seen some of the kewlest in film history. Keep in mind, it's not a big place, only about 250 capacity. Intimate and absolutely gorgeous. We did a quick soundcheck as TR opted to do this run completely solo acoustic so he could try and concentrate on new acoustic songs he has been working on. Quick sidenote: he also brought along a 3rd acoustic on this trip, his Gibson acoustic which he will break out at the Gibson showcase in Memphis. Can't wait for that! So we did a fairly early soundcheck even though doors weren't until 9 PM for this particular gig. After that we headed out to find a spot for dinner and Rob Drabkin took the stage for his soundcheck. After finding out that Friday nite in Telluride is not an easy place to find a spot that isn't packed since it's so small we finally found ourselves dining in a very kewl BBQ pit called Fat Alley BBQ. Fantastic food! We all 3 left completely stuffed with MEAT!

Now it was back to the venue to kill a few hours until doorTIMe and setTIMe. We had considered walking back to the chalet since we could actually walk there in about 5 minutes. Keep in mind, it was on the outskirts of town and the venue was directly in the center. Did I mention Telluride was SMALL? LOL We opted to just hang at the venue. Upon our return, TR decided with a closed room and stage he would take this opportunity to rehease some of the new songs he has been working on. Can I say UNBELIEVEABLE! Not just the songs, but the room! TR went out on the stage and just started playing with not PA and the acoustic guitar sounded absolutely amazing. They weren't just whistling dixie when they said amazing acoustics. Sadly, this would be the best part of the night. LOL Later at the end of the nite Rob Drabkin summed it up best when I asked him, "So how was the nite for you?". His response, "Well, soundcheck was amazing." LOL I replied so was TR's impromptu rehearsal completely unplugged.

Rob had a rough nite with crowd for his opening set and we hoped it would get better for TR's. Sadly this was not the case, only worse. TR did a beautiful set to a room half full of drunks talking and screaming ruining for all who tried to enjoy this amazing performance in an absolutely beautiful room with an amazing vibe. It really bummed us out that this amazing venue went to waste. Should have been an unforgettable show, instead it became a forgettable evening for us. The staff and promoters were also bummed at the audiences inconsiderateness. I even positioned myself by the front door so I could hear what people were saying on their way out. It seems to me that in a town that small everyone pretty much knows everyone and it seems like part of the audience is regulars at shows there and they were waaaaay unhappy with the audience. Most commonly heard comment on the way out, "TR was fucking amazing, but that was the WORST audience you have ever had in here!" That coming from the paying guests not us. LOL The good news is that Rob, who had a few things to do after our radio performance and was not sure he would be able to make it back in TIMe for TR's performance made it back and managed to record it. I am not sure if he got a board patch which he said he usually does but hopefully he did otherwise the recording maybe unlistenable given the audience chatter and yelling that included one gentleman who kept yelling "Some Devil" over and over again. Rob Drabkin was standing near him and said he felt like popping him one. He also informed us that was the same guy who tried to instigate clapping to all of TR's songs but was always way outta TIMe. EGADS!

So the short answer is GREAT show, BAD audience,at least half of them, some were trying to be respectful but it's hard in an enviroment like that. Some of them were very attentive and respectful but the other half seemed to overshadow the quiet ones. Surprise, surprise. We had a great TIMe in Telluride, pretty much all except for the actual show. LOL I really wish Ron had been there to get TR's rehearsal recorded. I would have loved to share that with all of you. It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL! The setlist for the evening looked something like this, but TR, by his own admission, had to change things up on a moments notice given the LOUDNESS of the audience. The tale of the tape will reveal the actual setlist. Here is how it appeared in front of him:

Thanx to all the wonderful people who took such great care of us on our visit to Telluride, Mike, Justin, Dave Lamb, Keira, Ben & the staff from KOTO-FM. We had a GREAT TIMe despite the show. LOL An awesome bunch of people who truly love what they do, just like us.

PS: This would be an amazing place to do a TR Task Force concert with TR playing completely unplugged performance to roomful of real appreciaters. Ahhhhhh, to dream!

Wanna speand some quality TIMe with TR? Then take a walk with TR thru the streets of Telluride, CO and see him get excited about and buy coffee on his way to KOTO-FM for an interview and 3 songs live on the air. If that isn't enough TR for you, you can also view the whole TR performance at The Sheridan Opera House from that evening as well.

TR says it's the 12 string set that is unusual and I guess thats the ones we are always looking for and can never find. They are D'Addario EJ39 Phosphor Bronze 12-String/Medium

For the 6 it's EJ16 Phosphor Bronze Light. He also buys loose 56's for the the 6 string(when they have them in-stock, which isn't often LOL)

Thanks Fluffy, I was waiting for a review. Sad to hear the show was full of inconsiderate folks. I love Telluride and saw the DEAD there many TIMes, great town. The idea of a task force show is a really good one and you could pull it off easily. I have helped with that sort of show before....Hope the rest of the tour goes really well, get some rest dude! (yeah right).Peace, Robin

that's funny rob. i didn't think you would do such a thing as hit someone, maybe if you had Tim Rew and Fluffy backing you, but then again they want to come back to that venue and perform there again....so oh well.

you cant predict every crowd and too bad because i completely understand why they didn't take to your music because you don't play music for the "crazy bar drunk" crowd, but more so the sit down candle light setting of the soiled dove.

ya, I am definitely not a fighter. I am also pretty sure Mr. No-Rhythm-Some-Devil man could have squashed me into oblivion with little to no effort effort. The man was HUGE

The crowd/frat party was a bummer. But i suppose every high has a low and in this case, literally-- Telluride is what 9 billion feet in altitude. We had it coming.

I must say though, Telluride is an incredible place to be

did Tim do an encore then Fluffy? I know at the Black Sheep the crowd wasn't paying attention and what not and he just didn't want to get back on stage.

uhm Rob doesn't look like a fighter to me. but good story, maybe I'll have a few hours later to read it all.

Great, great, great review, Fluffy!!!

At first I was bummed that the latest run of shows was without the Flying-V guitar. But after 6 new songs on the list I about crapped my pants!!

I can't wait until April 4th! New songs, new songs, new songs...

P.S. What type of strings are these that are so hard to find? Inquiring minds want to know...
