So performance 2 was in the big tent to the big crowd who were also wonderful and enthusiatic but it was a whole different vibe than the 1st day. Not better or worse, just different. TR played his ass off but he never rolled around on the floor or jumped up and down like an ape. And of course after the show he said it was a great show and crowd but that it just felt like a different vibe than the day before. It was a much larger stage, over 6 feet high, TR looked so small up there by himself. It was at least 4 TIMes the size of the Campground tent and again by the end of the set it was packed only everyone was sitting and digging it, whereas the day before everyone was up and DANCING. They were shakin' that ass as I like to say. There were some up front who were dancing today but yesterday it was the whole tent. They were much closer to TR as well so you get that audience feedback which really serves the artist. You know, that connection. Well it was another wonderful set, almost completely different from Day 1 as you probably noticed. Of interest, Hands Full, another new one about the ravages of NEWS(I am sure Rubylith will love this one). As far as the new songs go it's right up there with Ancestors as one of my faves. Absolutely awesome! I was so glad TR snuck Ancestors in even though it wasn't on his setlist. Splattered & Scattered is one of the noise pieces TR does as he switches from 6 to 12 usually. This one featured some awesome slide work that can only be described as BLUES. Speaking of, Hands Full also had a very bluesey feel to it as well. Put the Gas Mask on appeared in the set as an afterthought as well since it wasn't on the original setlist. He played this in a new way that I don't think I have heard before. I have heard him play it a few different ways but this version sounded new to me. I really dug it. Sex Machine featured a tease of lyrics from Light Up Ahead as well. It was crafty the way he snuck them in so effortlessly. And the spontaneous improv piece he did was really beautiful. When I asked him if it had a name he said he just kinda made it up as he went along feeling like he needed something like that at that point in the set since there was no Stream. The recording of this one sounds very nice. I noticed a touch of feedback during Gas Mask but almost not even that noticeable and it came and went so quickly. The volume of this recording seems to be a bit louder than the Campground Tent set I received. All in all very nice and definitely worth a listen for the variations and new songs. I am so glad I was here for these shows, I would have hated to miss these performances.
As for the rest of the day, we were treated spectacularly again by the Wakarusa staff. Special thanx to Kim, Fonz, and Boogie who made it all fun, ez and wonderful. Great folks! Again, the food in catering was spectacular. BBQ pork, beans, and cole slaw. I know, sounds plain, but they did wonders with it. Hell, I don't usually even eat coleslaw but this was so good I gobbled it down. After dinner we were able to catch most of Michael Franti's set and TR really loved it. We are really looking forward to the Flaming Lips tomorrow. It was another beautiful day, hot like yesterday, but a bit more humid. Still not as bad as DC I am happy to say. Today we had an air conditioned trailer for our dressing room which in retrospect seemed to make it harder. LOL. Don't get me wrong, it was nice, but going from the kewl to the hot every few minutes made the hot seem hotter. Yesterday we just had a little tent with an fan so we were quite accustomed to the temperature all day. But it was getting to the point that I didn't want to go in the trailer because I knew when I came out again it would see so much hotter than it actually was because it was so kewl in the trailer. Anyway, it was nice to have it, I ain't complaining just observing. LOL Guess that's day 2 in a nutshell. If I think of anything else I will amend. |

Posted - 07/07/2006 : 9:39:08 PM Tim!
It was a pleasure meeting you and I am glad that you enjoyed your stay at Wakarusa '06. Your show was most memorable (OK, so I didn't see ALL of it, I was busy man!).
Hope to see you next year.....although I don't know why you would ever leave New Mexico's borders. It is, to me, the most beautiful state we got (haven't been to Hawaii yet). lol
Peace brother. |

Posted - 06/21/2006 : 3:50:52 PM hey fluffy, nice to finally put a face with the name.
The vids turned out pretty sweet. Wilson will mix them up and send them out as soon as we get all this audio together.
And just to add on the Podcast comments....DAMN that was a cool little set. We definitely felt honored to have witnessed that. Very unique setting, definitely one of those, "wish everyone could have witnessed that" moments.
We'll be in touch soon!

Posted - 06/19/2006 : 9:59:38 PM Apparently, TR's second performance is now available:
Harrahs Voodoo Stage in the Revival Tent -- Friday 6/9/2006
I think they are still trying to work out disc2 of the first days show so that is why that is probably not up yet. Keep watching, should be up soon. When I left the festival they told me they were working on fixing disc2 from the multi-tracks. |

Posted - 06/12/2006 : 10:13:05 PM very nice reviews Fluffy. I actually liked the 2nd day more...probably partially just because I was in a better mood. We BARELY made it to the first TR set because of the ridiculous line getting into the festival. Plus, the Revival tent was so nice and cool and I could get a good view since it wasn't too packed (it sucks being short). It'd be really cool to see video of either of those sets!
I saw Tim during the Flaming Lips set and right afterwards. I thought about going up and thanking him for the kickass music but he looked occupied.

Jason's pics are amazing! I wish I had seen those before I posted my review above. It would have been alot easier to say just look at pic 3040 and 3043 to see what I meant about the size of the tent, stage and audience. TR looks so small. hehe If you look closely you can find me in one of the shots. Kinda like "Where's Waldo?" only "Where's Fluffy?" |
