The show was an absolute blast. My friends and I were officially the first ones to arrive at the venue, even before Will Bradford and TR/Crew. While Tim and Rew were setting up inside, I stayed outside to bug Fluffy while he was getting the CD's from the van ready for the merch table. Once Tim saw the size of the venue he came outside and proclaimed that it was more set up for a chirch choir than a rock show, so he decided that he would keep the first set entirely acoustic and debut a few new songs that he hadn't performed in public yet. Fine by me! The venue was absolutely tiny and perhaps the intimate size led to the crowd being the way it was, but you could hear a pin drop during the performance. It was great. Will Bradford opened and he was a pretty solid performer. He played one of those funky electric acoustics with no body... it was... funky. I'll post pictures later. I didn't find his playing spectacular, but he played one really cool song on his other acoustic that was in some funky tuning that was really cool. He warmed everyone up nicely for Tim, and I'd probably go see him if he ever comes around with his band. Tim's set was great... it was mostly stuff that I recognized, and the new acoustic songs he played were nothing short of mindblowing. Absolutely beautiful. I can't wait to see how they evolve over time. His soloing style was a bit different this show than any other that I've seen... it was much more blow your mind jazzy/chord oriented than blow your mind with speed, allthough he blew my mind with both. He was much more talkitive and animated than the other times I've seen him too. He played an effects jam that he so eloquently introduced as "Giggling Lemurs Rescuing Fog." I couldn't help but crack up as I was writing the title down. When he finished, he went off on a tangent about how the Lemurs must have rescued the Fog because you coldn't see it anymore. Very funny stuff. Other than getting to hear a few new songs, the highlight of the show for me was Chatterbox. This was the peak of the jazzy soloing of the night. He must have played 50+ non-standard chords over the course of the song. His sheer knowledge of the instrument was well demonstrated here... it was unbelievable. Tim also played Impermanence, which I was thrilled to hear live. I'm still waiting to hear my personal favorite Letting Go, but I guess that will still have to wait until next time. It was a somewhat short set and there was no encore, I'd have to guess because people were already lined up outside for the second show. But the show was fantastic and I was happy to get to see what I did. I can't tell you how big of an ass I felt like leaving after the first show, but it was either leave with friends or try to hitch a ride home with a random person at the show (I live pretty far from the venue and didn't have NEARLY enough cash on me to call a cab). Maybe I'm just not a dedicated enough fan, but I figured-- be happy that I got to see the first set and don't ditch my friends. So I said my goodnight and headed on. I know Fluffy probably thought I was being a wuss not asking around for a ride, but I just didn't want to worry about ending up in the car with a random drunk driver when I had my buddies right there. I would have loved to stay all night and hang out after the show, but it just didn't work out. Oh well. I'm just glad that I got to see what I did... I still got to chat with Fluffy for a few minutes before the show and he was nausiatingly generous as always. Tim still put on a great performance... and I had an absolute blast. So the evening was great even if I didn't get to see the second show. Here is the setlist as I wrote it down... I double checked it against the actual setlist Fluffy had after the show but I didn't write down the names of the effects jams/intros except for what Tim introduced over the mic. 1. Jemez 2. Shade 3. Danger/Doom Funny Tim moments worth mentioning: Waiting outside right after the sound check when 2 low flying F-22's pass overhead and Tim comes busting out the front door and yells, "Hit the deck- incoming incoming!" and then pops back inside. Giggling Lemurs Rescuing Fog... if I'm ever in a band- that's its name. Halfway through the set Tim covered his head with a towel, walked up to the mic and just started making noises. "The strings have a lot of discontent" after his 12 string fell out of tune.
