Posted - 05/11/2008 : 9:33:59 PM Today is our first day in the recording studio. We are deep in the wilds of C-ville, very secluded, absolutely beautiful. Both the place and the studio. We have the amazing engineering talents of Rob Evans and assisting him is Joe Lawler. So far both have proved themselves as invaluable.
Day one: So far we have laid down basic tracks for "See You In Your Dreams" & "Do You Wanna". DYW we ran thru 4 TIMes and ended up going with Take 1. We have done minimal overdubs and are really happy with what we have down so far. Both of SYIYD & DYW were recorded on the Strat. Next on the agenda "By Your Side". More updates as they occur. STAY TUNED! |

Posted - 10/04/2008 : 08:14:53 AM Looks like prolly January for the TR3 CD. Everyone wants to do it right and not rush it out like we have done with so many of TR's releases in the past. We were hoping to have it out in TIMe for the Oct run but the powers that be think we should wait and release it with full fanfare.
As far as logos, the 20 sum odd logos that we already proposed to TR got the nix. If you would like to send something else feel free but I am having a hard TIMe getting an idea of a direction TR would like to go in. Just about a month ago he told me he was rethinking one of the proposed designs but haven't heard anymore about it. Of course he has been quite busy since then.
In the meanTIMe, "Do You Wanna"(version from the 10KLF sampler CD) is now available on TR's myspace page. I have also been meaning to post(I was gonna do it in the show review section for the 10KLF gig but obviously I haven't gotten to that) that I acquired a number of copies of the 10KLF sampler CD to distribute here to anyone who would like one for their TR3 collection. The version on this CD will be slightly different from the CD version that comes out on the album. I guess the easiest way to do that is anyone who wants one needs to send a SASE to me and I will shoot a copy back to you by return mail. The CD is not in a jewel case but a cardboard sleeve so you should so you should send something big enuf to accomodate that size. Of course I only have limited amounts so it will be on a first come, first serve basis. Who knows, maybe noone will care. hehe |

I thought I was told Oct would be the release date, not sure where I got that from, if it was something Fluffy said in VA Beach or what, but wondering the same as John. I can't make a show in the fall tour and REALLY NEED A TR3 FIX!
BTW Fluffy how are things coming along for a logo? Got some new ideas if you want them. |

Posted - 06/27/2008 : 8:01:40 PM Well if you take the TIMe to read all of the above "ramblings of a madman" all the songs are listed within that text. For simplicity and ease of reading(hehe) here is what was recorded:
See You In Your Dreams Wind Just Blew The Door Wide Open By Your Side Move On Ahead Victory Express Test of Time(dedicated to MLK) Sweet Spot Kabbalah Do You Wanna Meaning To Tell You Trippin On You Cave Man Burning Season Ley Lines ------------------------ Wild Country(Chris Whitley cover) "surprise track" and 2 alternate versions: 1 of Move On Ahead and 1 of Do You Wanna
The alternate version of Do You Wanna will be released on the 10,000 Lakes Festival sampler and is available to hear on their website.
Everything above the line are possible CD tracks. Not sure what will happen with the tracks below the line yet. Wild Country & the "surprise track" will see the light of day one way or another. The only one that prolly won't is the alternate mix of Move On Ahead but TR is still deciding which version he wants to use for the CD.

Posted - 06/27/2008 : 2:54:02 PM I think the whole thing is the tits personally. Vocals, guitars, bass, drums. TR3 is so tight live and on this recording. I can't wait for the album.
In listening to some of the live shows from earlier this year I'm wondering which songs made the CD.
Any chance we could get a track listing Fluffy?? |

Posted - 06/25/2008 : 09:55:11 AM It could just be the difference between being in the studio as opposed to performing live.
In the studio you have more time to relax, get everything just right, and take as many takes as you like. Plus you don't have the tendancy to really scream that you do when playing life.
Regardless, I do indeed think that his voice sounds really good on the recording... |

LOL Well here it is folks, the first track from the Haunted Hollow sessions. Can't wait to hear everyone's feedback. The track will be featured on a compilation CD that the 10,000 Lakes Festival is putting out. It will be a free giveaway CD to attendees and this particular version of "Do You Wanna" is the alternate mix I talked about above. It will be a slightly different mix on the TR3 CD when it comes out. So basically an exclusive version.
To Listen, visit:

find the "TR3 featuring Tim Reynolds" band page and "Do You Wanna" should be streaming on that page. ENJOY!!! |

probably because tim doesn't have the TIMe or money to spend forever and a day recording 10 TRacks like dmb has. hence not pressing any older cds for awhile and focusing on the new tr3 album.
You responded to the wrong comment, come on Semon, you're losing your touch!
I don't want to get into the DMB non-debate, yet I must say the only reason I'm thinking about going this year is that TR is going to be there. |

Posted - 05/19/2008 : 02:15:19 AM That's a WRAP! BIG print party!! TIMe to pack up and get ready to clear out of paradise. Walking with 18 mixes. 14 TR songs plus 2 of those have alternate mixes, the CW cover of Wild Country and I will let the 18th be a surprise. We have gotten quite a bit accomplished here in our short TIMe. Attributable to our FANTASTIC engineer Rob and the sheer tightness of this line-up of TR3. Of course alot of that also has to do with TR having such a clear vision of the songs in his head when we walk in. Rob was able to tap into that vision & realize the sound for TR. It's a beautiful thing. Signing off from deep in the heart of VA. |
Fluffy |

No print parties yet but I think we are nearing our first for our last day in the studio. Last nites print party for Victory Express was off the hook. Dan captured it all on his little camera and it's just sheer mayhem. Rolling right along. |

Posted - 05/18/2008 : 1:48:07 PM So true, from what I've read you should only spend 12 hours or so at a time and give your ears rest. It can be taxing! You guys rule thanks for these posts!!!!!!!! |
Fluffy |
Posted - 05/18/2008 : 03:27:26 AM So around 2:30 AM EST Rob had to call it a nite, his ears were spent and who could blame him we accomplished so much today. So me and the boyz have spent the last hour in dark studio with everything we have finished so far reviewing it. You have to understand, while you are mixing you are listening to little parts over and over and tweeking and putting it all together then after hearing all these random, disjointed parts again and again you listen thru it once and decide its where you want it to be. You must understand it's not always easy to really appreciate it while you are listening so intently. You are listening to individual parts and there isn't really TIMe to appreciate the song as a whole. So it's nice to go back at the end of the day and just sit back in a comfy seat, turn down the lights, close your eyes and disappear into the music and hear it as a whole the way you were meant to LISTEN to it instead of SCRUTINIZING it. To truly appreciate it. The stress and attention to detail are behind you and you are left to just let the song wash over you. I wish there was enuf TIMe and space to convey every comment from the guys about each track. The depth and insight into the music from the perspective of the guys who played it is absolutely priceless. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but right here. One that stood out to me was one of Mick's while listening to Kaballah, he said all he could think of while listening to his bass part on that one was Geddy Lee & "YYZ". Whodda thunk it? I love my job!!!
Only 4 more to go....good night & have a pleasant tomorrow! |

Posted - 05/18/2008 : 12:32:49 AM 12:30 AM EST and we are deep in the mixing of Victory Express and Dan says "Man! It sounds f*cking GREAT!!". It sounds big, gigantic, arena rock huge baby! I think we are nearing "print party", Dan is on the edge of his seat...........says that VE sounds like something from Jeff Beck's album "There & Back". NICE comparison! |
Fluffy |
Posted - 05/17/2008 : 11:21:01 PM 11:15 PM EST: We just finished up "Do You Wanna" which Dan says is sounding like "Muscle Shoals funk". It's all sounding so good! The ruff mix of "Move On Ahead" drew comparisons from all involved to Santana, War & even the Doobie Bros. Amazing harmonies and just down & dirty funky. This project is really taking on a 70's RAWK sound. TR even told us the story of the first TIMe he heard Led Zep. Now that was an interesting tale(and funny too!) DYW in the bag! TIMe for another "print party"....YEAH!!!! These have become Dan's favorite words. LOL We actually have 2 mixes. The first I am calling "ruff mix" and the second is fondly titled "vegan mix". I will leave that one to your imagination. Gotta jump, Dan is screaming "print party"!! |

LOL) It was fabulous. Great food, great company, great enviroment, great VIBE! What more could you ask for? We are back at work and finishing up "Kaballah". As I typed we decided it's "there" so it's TIMe to go to print. What will we do next? Only the shadow knows or in this case Rob. And the diesel is kicking in!!!!!! |

Posted - 05/17/2008 : 6:35:21 PM 6:30 PM EST: Well we finished the ruff of WJBTDWH and moved onto "Test of Time" and just finished the ruff mix of ToT which may have been the easiest so far. It needed very little tampering. Quick and painless and inspired our engineer Rob to comment, "You guys lay down a MEAN, psychedelic blues!". Early on he compared TR3 to Zeppelin and of course that made the guys VERY happy. I think a dinner break is coming soon. Rob's wife is coming by with their kids to BBQ some chicken and then it's mix into the nite or as 38 Special like to say "Rockin' into the night"! |

Posted - 05/17/2008 : 03:46:59 AM 3:30 AM EST: Calling it quits for the evening. Posted - 05/17/2008 : 01:31:34 AM 1:30 AM EST: We have wrapped up "Meaning To Tell You" and it sounds like a island music, reggae in the classic sense, beautiful. It will be the smash of Jamcruise(of course we have to be asked to play on the boat before that can happen, but when we are, IT WILL! hehe). Currently working on "Move On Ahead" which I think will be wrapped up very soon. During all of this a discussion of "Leelines" came up and after some searching on the internet the NEW version of "Leelines" will get a new name...."Ley Lines". Apparently this is the proper spelling so with the fresh new recording it will get a fresh old spelling. Here is a link to a past discussion of Ley Lines if you are interested in knowing more:

Posted - 05/16/2008 : 02:06:09 AM 2 AM EST After 12 ears, 5 different sets of speakers, we have ruff mixes of "Wild Country" & "Leelines" that we are all ecstatic about. We are currently embarking on a ruff mix of "See You In Your Dreams" and it is sounding absolutely lush & beautiful. The first 2 sounded monsterous on TR's nuclear boombox...WHOOOOAAAA! Color me excited. |
Fluffy |
Posted - 05/15/2008 : 10:01:45 PM 10 PM EST and it has been a whirlwind of an afternoon & evening. We finished "Wild Country" and it is smoking! Especially considering that Mick & Dan didn't even know the song when we started working on it. I wish I could have captured all the amazing compliments by all the guys in the band and studio personnel that were heaped out about Chris Whitley. Words like genius, "ez to make it sound this good when the material you are working with is soooo awesome". You get the idea. It went on and on. There was alot of love here in this project for Chris. Hell, it was the impetus for TR to want to undertake it. I could go on and on but you get the point. Don't want to give to much away about it, want it to be a sweet surprise. I can assure you you won't be disappointed. After finishing up WC we began work on a new improved version of "By Your Side". We revisited it with a totally different approach. All of it was on the Strat with parts thru the Rotosphere. Very different from our original attempt 4 days ago. Another example of the organic nature of the precedings here. Now we are just listening to what we have and deciding where to go with it all. AWESOME! Everyone VERY, VERY happy, excited and any other positive words you can think of! |

Posted - 05/15/2008 : 2:31:30 PM 2:30 PM EST and we are moving on. This should be fun....as we have moved ever so quickly thru TR's songs there was a song way at the bottom of the list that TR said he would like to work on if there was TIMe....seems like there is....so we are...."Wild Country" by Chris Whitley. TR apparently loves the song and learned a version of it recently and wanted to try it with TR3. Should be interesting since Dan & Mick aren't really familiar with it. They are just going to build it off of TR's part. That works since the original by CW was solo acoustic anyway. Creating music! YAY!!! Can't wait to see how it comes together. Looks like TR is starting it on the "V".
UPDATE: 3 PM EST They are working out and getting close, ideas are flowing. TR just commented that he is having so much fun & he is happy to be playing this song. "It's one of my favorites in the world" he said "...and I am having so much fun playing it with you guys!" It's definitely coming together. Dan said he is channeling Jim Keltner for this one. hehe |

Posted - 05/15/2008 : 1:27:05 PM 1 PM EST and tape is rolling. First on the agenda is a new bass line for Kaballah by Mick. Overnite he just decided he wanted to tighten it up a bit and we had a bit 'o' TIMe before TR was ready to rock so we just ran thru it a few TIMes and are now listening back and deciding what we like the best. We will have to wait & see what the day brings beyond that. Updates as they occur. TR just commented as we were listening that "this" is the best solo he has ever played. Posted - 05/14/2008 : 10:25:06 PM 10 PM EST: MTTY is completely in the bag and everything was played on the Strat. And we just finished Burning Season which was also all done on the Strat. Worthy of note, BS was the first song with any bass overdubs. We had taken to calling Mick "One Take Rooney". hehe Burning Season is just a wild, fast jam. Watching them play that song is a real treat. No musician is without the utmost respect watching them play that. We even managed to include a nod to Wayne's World on that track. You will just have to wait for the CD to find out exactly what I mean. Ahhhhhh, something to look forward to. We are now on a short break and then we push on "Kaballah". Ohhh, forgot to mention, we had a nice surprise this evening, Robert Jospe, original TR3 drummer stopped in tonite to say "HIGH" and hung around for part of the recording of Burning Season. As I said before about musicians watching them perform that track, he was duly impressed. I think we will be seeing him again later in the week. And we'll have fun, fun, fun til DMB takes our TR away!!!!!!!! |

Everyone felt great about all we accomplished yesterday and they are psyched for another equally productive day. It's kinda crazy cuz it doesn't feel like we are flying thru it but we really are, faster than I think any of us expected it to. It's just all coming together, very ORGANIC! |

Posted - 05/14/2008 : 12:45:51 AM 12:45 AM EST After 5 run-thrus of Burning Season we have decided to put it to bed for the nite. It was wearing the guys out. Imagine playing that song 5 TIMes in a row AFTER recording 4 other songs that day. TR called it "a workout". Usually that song gets played once a nite and boyz agree thats enuf. Kudos to them, we completely understand. It's gonna shred tomorrow. Now we are putting a little fine tuning on Sweet Spot. |

Posted - 05/13/2008 : 11:25:59 PM Is anyone else becoming nauseous from the overwhelming jealousy of: 1.) The great fortune to be a musician in the studio 2.) The great fortune to be Fluffy in the studio with said musician
I've never hated my job as much as I do right now... |

Posted - 05/13/2008 : 11:22:32 PM 11:15 PM EST: Well it RAWKED! We ended up flying in the guitar solo from the 1st run thru to the almost perfect 3rd take of the song and called that IT. We are now going to run thru Burning Season and see if it's worth pursuing tonite or call it quits and wait until tomorrow. I will let you know what we decide shortly.
11:35 PM EST And a decision has been made...RAWK ON! TR with Strat in hand, we undertake Burning Season. |

Posted - 05/13/2008 : 9:36:50 PM 9:30 PM EST: Finished up most of MOA including TR's vocals, Mick & Dan's vocals & some guitar overdubs. Then took a short dinner break and now we are moving on to "Cave Man". We have dimmed the lights, lit the candles and the lava lamps are in full effect. The Les Paul is making its first appearance. It is going to RAWK! |

Posted - 05/13/2008 : 6:05:05 PM 6 PM: Everyone is comfortable with basic tracks on ToT and we are moving on ahead with "Move On Ahead". TR is using the Strat for basic track on this one with the Marshall relocated back to it's closet. |

Posted - 05/13/2008 : 2:25:16 PM Spent the last couple of hours listening back to trax and TR did a couple of blues-lick overdubs on "Sweet Spot" on the Strat thru the aforementioned Fender Deluxe. As of a couple of minutes ago started work on "Leelines". 1st take, TR is using the Strat for the basic track. Joe & Rob had to work out some different amp placement for TR today since he wanted to get some feedback out of it. Sounds good so far. Will let you know more when I have it.
Update 4:45 PM EST: We ran thru "Leelines" a few TIMes and finally decided on a working version & TR laid down some overdubs to it. Then we took a small break and now we are into "Test of Time" basic tracks with TR on the Strat. |

Posted - 05/13/2008 : 03:17:53 AM Wow, how did I miss this thread?
I hope TR3 is having better luck in this studio than DMB has (Lillywhite Sessions and Stand Up)
It's great to hear all the progress. I also want to thank you fluffy on giving us info on what's going on. That is one thing that always irks me is when the musicians don't let the fans know what is going on, and kind of leave us in the dark . . . like this: www.dmbnewstudioalbum.com . . . it gets stressful wondering about what is going on.
I can't wait for the album! |

Posted - 05/13/2008 : 02:20:35 AM Well it has degenerated into sheer madness here and lucky for you it was all captured LIVE! Hell, even Toxic Pooh invaded the studio....SCARY! Signing off, GOOD NITE!!! |

Posted - 05/12/2008 : 9:34:14 PM Today I had do a run into town for supplies & groceries. While I was gone the guys worked on "Wind Just Blew The Door Wide Open". Basic tracks recorded on the Strat with overdubs on the 6 string Martin acoustic. Not sure of all the details on this one since I wasn't here but it sounds AWESOME, very LUSH.
We just had a wonderful dinner break courtesy of Joe, steak, chicken, corn on the cob all grilled, VERY nice. I actually had a buffalo steak & it was damn good. I think everyone is feeling a bit of food-coma but we are pressing on and getting ready to run thru "Trippin on You" for the first TIMe. Looks like the basic track will be recorded with the "V". Will let you know more when I have it.
UPDATE 11:30 PM: Giant lava lamps on and we are into overdubs on ToY. Guitar overdubs were also on the "V" but TR used his Fender Deluxe Amp for a cleaner sound. He says a Gibson thru a Fender is always gonna sound like that. LOL First TIMe the Fender Deluxe has been utilized in this studio session so ya know. Working now on vocal overdubs. TR says he is using Maurice White as inspiration on the vocal overdubs for this track. Just laid down a wicked ring modulator overdub thru the solo. CHOICE! Now it's Dan's turn quick background vocal overdub & Will Farrell called and said we need "MORE COWBELL"! |

Posted - 05/12/2008 : 1:03:33 PM Back at work, right on schedule. We had a little morning panic as the coffee maker died but the problem has been rectified and we are ready to roll. Couple of small overdubs are on the agenda first for "Sweet Spot" & then we will see what the day brings. Basic tracks for SS were on the "V" as I mentioned earlier. Overdubs were on both the Strat & the V in the second half of the song. Moving onto "Victory Express".
A few more pictures of Haunted Hollow:
http://www.antsmarching.org/images/news/studio/studiopictures.php
Focus on the 3rd row down & the pic to the right with the 3 doors in it. TR is set up in the door to the right with guitar and Mick is set up with bass in the door on the left. Dan has the drums set up in the main room facing that wall of doors so they can all see each other. Worthy of note, the door in the middle goes back to a lounge with an entertainment center and pool table but while recording we can't use this area. Why you ask? Well our engineer Rob has set up mics in that room and we keep the doors open to that room during recording to help flesh out the drum sound. It works amazingly well. I guess it's what you could call a true "hall" reverb as the sound travels up the hallway between the 2 studio rooms to the mics in the lounge. Ingenius!! |

Posted - 05/12/2008 : 12:33:27 AM Yes, indeed it is Haunted Hollow. I think we are looking at more of a fall release date. We will prolly get all the tracks laid down but I doubt we will get it all mixed before Sunday. I would suspect the fall is a good TIMe to expect the new TR3 release.
We ran thru "By Your Side" a few TIMes and decided to move on as the guys aren't as familiar or comfortable with that particular song as it has only been played 3 TIMes before the studio. Still fleshing it out & trying to let it grow. Basic track for BYS was on the Strat. It is sounding great so far but it will get some more attention over the next few daze. In the meanTIMe we have moved onto "Sweet Spot" which is sounding amazing. At soundcheck in Richmond the other nite TR suggested a slight change to the drum pattern from the way they had been playing it and it completely changed the groove of the song for me. In fact everyone loved the change. It went from being a very surfy sounding song to being more of a ZZ Top sorta groove. TR is using the Flying "V" on this track. Very kewl!
(a bit about Haunted Hollow from the journal of Stefan Lessard)
quote: After making my way down two miles of dirt road, I pull up to the studio. It's named Haunted Hollow because it sits on the edge of a hollow that they think is haunted. (Pretty obvious, but I just thought I'd let you know.) I haven't heard any stories as to why it might be haunted, but I have to say that I've found myself alone there late at night before and did feel pretty spooked out.
In a way, every studio that I've been in has spooks. There's so much soul searching that happens when you make a record, and a lot of these studios have been open for 20+ years, so they have to contain some kind of specters. If only the walls could talk!
Our studio was originally a house with a dancehall attached on one side. For whatever reason the old owner had to sell. We came across it and decided that the house really wanted to be turned into a studio. It took a few years to renovate it properly, but when it was done, it was as good as any professional studio in the world. The main room where we track drums is beautiful and functional and makes the drums sound great. As far as gear goes, I'm a bit dumb when it comes to the names of everything, but I do know that we use Pro Tools as our main recording platform. We also have a two-inch tape recorder like the ones that people used before Pro Tools took over the world.

Posted - 05/12/2008 : 12:10:37 AM That is so cool! Thanks Fluffy! Is it the same studio DMB was in for Stand Up (Haunted Hallows or something?)? Is it expected to come out before he goes on tour with DMB? |
