I'm posting this in the TR section because, as many already know, Tim will be featured on the track "Joy of Love" on the upcoming SOKO release. Here is the latest update from Mr. Soko himself:

The Soko album is nearing completion -- some tunes are being mastered as I type this, so it shouldn't be too long ...
There will be some major sonic and musical enhancements... We're going to try to get a free download of 'Rain' up asap.

I've said it before, I'm not sure how they could possibly improve upon In November Sunlight, but I can't wait to hear the new recordings.

Thanks for the heads up Fluff! I bet Pam will be excited!

You know me well, excited doesn't begin to discribe how I feel about the project! What I heard so far is amazing.

I would just like to thank TR for doing those parts in D.C. He recorded them after doing two shows and even Mike said he isn't sure he himself would have done that for anyone! He was blown away that TR did that. Just another testiment to how great TIM is, not only as a musician, but also as a person.

So not sure how many caught it but in my review of TR's Blues Alley shows I mentioned that Mike came up and recorded TR for a future SOKO release. Well that release is going to be a complete re-do of In November Sunlight – songs in order with basically the same arrangements – plus a bonus track.

Reason for the "re-do" from Mike:
quote:
The reason for the re-do is that we don’t think the execution of the CD was up to the level of the tunes themselves, or our ability as a band at that time. It was a pale reflection of what we were, with lots of errors, bad production, etc. The new one is gonna smoke. It’s already better and we’re not even halfway there yet.

I can't wait to hear this completed. I have heard some of the unfinished recordings and so far it already sounds amazing compared to the original, even in their unfinished state.

It is finally finished and will be available in April!

The CD comes with a beautiful 12 page booklet of artwork, one created for each song. Check out the Soko website for more information and downloads.

Thanks, Fluffy -- that's really gratifying to read.

Album should be out in March.

UPDATED links as the above link for RAIN no longer works:

Rain

This should not surprise many of you, but I absolutely adore the version of RAIN. As most know I am a huge Beatles fan, so I don't say this lightly, I have to agree with PJK, this version may be more beautiful than even the Beatles version. Not many artists get a compliment like that from jaded ole me. It is especially wonderful to hear Houston Ross singing and playing guitar so wonderfully on this track as I have only seen him play bass with TR and only heard him sing in the van on TouR. His subtle approach to the lyrics compliment the song and the words. Mike's playing on this is also exceptional and may be the real reason I like this more than the Beatles version. Some of his piano flourishes are outstanding. He didn't overplay at all which alot of artists have a tendency to do. I think the secret to a brilliant artist is being able to play FLASHY, BUT knowing when to hold back. This is a perfect example. KUDOS!!

I have comments for Plant the Sky as well, but I am late for work and will have to add them later. In the meantime, here are some links to the Bob Katz who mastered these beauties.

Just an update. This album is one step from being released which I am hoping is in Jan or Feb. It is all mastered by one of the greats, Bob Katz! (hope it was ok to say this Mike) I am so excited to hear the mastered version which I am told, is nothing like the demo.

Very different genre than TIM's music, but amazing works, sure to blow you away!

BTW, Arthen, I will see to it that I get you a copy of this when it comes out. I truly think you will love it!

Sounds AMAZING Mike! You were right about the sonic enhancements. Personally, I thought the demo sounded great, but in comparison, the new one is all that much better. Can't wait for the entire album!

BTW, thanks JTR!

Excellent -- thanks for the info. I never knew that. OK, Tonight, I'll drop the compromise (sarcastic?) quote marks I changed it to on my lunch break. ; )

I was just going with a misunderstanding that the term covered SQ compression issues in general.

shn and flac are about 50% of a wav file, but the term 'lossy' implies that information is lost, while lossless implies that information is only compressed.

Awesome track. Can't wait for the CD.

good to hear from you mike :) thanks for the d/l, i'll check it out.

Im going to be a pain in the collective ass about something though, and i hope my intentions dont come off as anything but helpful :p

SHN isnt lossy at all, so it should be "lossless". You dont want to confuse people that may not know :)

All the best

Can't wait. "In November Sunlight" definitely gets playing time in my discman, particularly when it's November. Can't wait for more great stuff.

Thanks Kevin! I always forget to check up on Soko's stuff. I'm still waiting until I get a little money to buy the newest Offering album.
