Okay so I've been lurking this board for a while dropping a post every now and again. I have a question about something that never got quite cleared up for me. Did Tim ever really speak to why he hasn't played with the entire Dave Matthews Band since '98, or is it just more of the general sense of wanting to be himself and thus distancing himself from the pigeon-holing that was likely to follow were he to continue playing live with them. I guess I'm just wondering if it seems possible to anyone that he might go back out there with them sometime. I know he doesn't want to be a member and I really understand that concept, I just wanted to know if there were any specific conflicts or whatnot that are the reason for him not playing with them live anymore.
Thanks

Devon

i think that's all the proof anyone needs that john mayer is a fucking stain.

Holy crap that John Mayer line almost made me crap myself. I liked him for a while until I realized he was a tool and thought way too much of himself. Anyways, thanks that article helped.

I'll always enjoy reading that line about John Mayer.

I think there are three main reasons:

First was covered by Pam... Tim wants to focus on his own music.

Second: Tim is a family man, and hates to be away from the family. DMB tours a lot, and that would mean a lot of time away from his family.

Third: Tim hates to be tied down. This is the same reason he wont sign a record deal, despite being offered plenty. If he had to commit to DMB tour dates as well it would not give him the freedom to do as he likes... such as doing Kucinich benefit shows and whatnot.

Here is an excerpt form an interview with Tim were he kind of covers this topic... this is from '02 so it is a bit outdated.

quote:
You last played with DMB in 1998 (when "Live in Chicago" was recorded) and with Dave in winter 1999. Any plans to play with him or the band again?

We may get together to do some acoustic touring sometime in the future. I was contacted last year, by his manager, to do something. But I never heard back, maybe due to 9/11. Dave is the most giving, the sweetest person. He'd be like, "Hey, Timmy, I love what you're doing. Go for it.' "

Do you remember the show in Buffalo on that acoustic tour (in March 1999)? The fans were completely rude, Dave stopped in the middle of "Wild Horses," he told the crowd to shut up?

Yeah, I remember that! Somebody sent me a tape of that show, with Dave yelling at the crowd. I remember thinking, when I go out with my band, I'm going to play really loud and not take any time between songs - go right from one song to the next - to keep everyone quiet. You know, here are these kids with this acoustic show, they're not used to the quiet. I think Dave needed to yell at them. What else could he do?

What do you think of their last few albums?

I know everyone didn't like the album the did with Glen Ballard ("Everyday"), but for me it was cool to hear them do something different. It was really fresh for me.

The Internet is full of rumors that there was a falling out, or that some of the other members of DMB don't want to work with you.

That's so crazy. I could see how that happened, but no way. For one thing, I know he's busy. I'm not going to call him up and say, "Hey Dave, can we do an acoustic tour?" That would be crazy. He's so much bigger now than he was the last time we did the acoustic shows. On my part, it would be a sell-out move, because it's not what I want to do. And I could just sail along into the big time on Dave's name - John Mayer is totally copping that sound and living off that. I've already gotten what I need from working with Dave, spiritually. But I knew I had to go out and do my own work.

Why you say? well because I absolutely love the way Tim sounds with them. He adds a whole new dimension to their sound. Point is I would like to see it the same as I would like to see anybody I really love play with them. As for Tim doing his own thing, like I said, I'm down with that. Unfortunately I still haven't seen him because he hasn't been out West since I've had the opportunity and the means to go. By no means did I mean to insinuate that Tim is less solo than in some other context, I just would die to see him play with the dmb boys again. but whatever I'll be happy to see Tim in whatever context I can.

The only person who could answer that is TIM. Perhaps Fluffy would have an answer for you, but he is so busy I don't know when he will have TIMe to post on the board again.

My only thought was WHY? Why do you want to know? Is that something you would like to see happen?

I don't associate TIM with DMB because I didn't didn't discover his music via DMB. I really enjoy hearing him play with Dave and Friends, but perhaps even more, I enjoy listening to him play solo.

I think an artist's musical developement takes them on a journey so to speak. While TIM's musical journey has crossed paths with Dave in the past, I think they are both going in different directions.

TIM is a free spirit, which is one thing I like about his music. So, my guess is that TIM likes doing his own thing and producing his own sound. I would think the same is true of DMB.
