Does anyone know whats the best gauge and size of the pick for light gauge strings?? iv been using a heavy teardrop pick to play wif my acoustic mediums n its great but when i use it for the electric strings it gets clumsy.

Check these picks out by dunlop - i just got one of the "big stubby" ones yesterday and i love it! It makes fast licks a lot easier to play. Very sturdy, yet still some flexibility.

flaming moe anyone?

After trying a mess of picks out - I've settled on the Tortex .88 (solid green). I think they're just heavy enough to stay virtually break-free, but light enough so I don't abuse my acoustic strings.

Ok Jason, you put it on 2 threads and I am just reading this one now and I still think it's awesome!

I use picks around .73 when I use them. I've been getting away from picks more into fingerstyle/fingerpicking and just using my fingers to strum.

Wow, just checked my old posts and I see I've actually been here for two years. Guess my posting rate really is shamed by the likes of some of the guys around here.

I've been here for a while, I don't post much. I think I registered over a year ago, but thanks for the welcome none the less. As for thick picks, I also use heavy gauge strings so I don't know how they would work on light gauge.

hahaha cool.. but dont u think that a heavy pick would end up slipping on very light gauge strings??

Amen Brotha! On guitar I like 2mm picks (yeah I'm probably crazy like that). I started out with thin ones and kept getting thicker and thicker until I landed on these. As for bass, fingers all the way!

I think if you are a beginner I think it's best to use a medium or lighter pick. When you get comfortable with that, then look around. Something around .60mm, would serve pretty well in my opinion.

This of course, is my opinion.

Interesting question...I'd say not really. I think it's all a matter of preference. Try different guage picks and see what feels best. Most are still the same shape in the end.

When my father taught me how to play guitar he wouldn’t ever let me use a pick, so I had no idea that there were so many different types… Whenever I would try to use one, I would fumble all over the place with it (not to mention, felt a great sense of rebellion against my father, jk)… But here's my REALLY dumb question… is there a good/better beginners pick?
victorwootenfan Posted - 04/17/2003 : 2:50:14 PM
then again i am a bass player, so i rarely use picks... i never use picks on my bass(against my religion), and when i play guitar i use heavy jazz picks about 90 percent of the time. whenever i use a slide on guitar i always fingerpick tho.. i have weird habits, but ah well...

i never use a pick, whether for rythmn, lead, or anything in between. if you ever watched the birdcage, the housekeeper that cant wear shoes and always fall over cause of them... thats how i am with a pick.

Dunlop Medium-Light gels ( the clear-green ones) are picks that I have found to be a good versatile pick for both rhythm and lead playing. it's like goldie locks found the nice warm pick pouridge in between heavy and light... or something. Otherwise I use the 1.0 mm blue tortex picks. they rock. they NEVER break!
joojoo Posted - 04/17/2003 : 12:32:37 PM
Gotta throw my vote in for Tortex picks too... never had a problem with them.
CPPJames Posted - 04/17/2003 : 12:25:34 PM
I always use lighter picks...just feel more comfortable to me. Completely agree on the Dunlop Tortex though, phenomenal picks.
Silky The Pimp Posted - 04/17/2003 : 11:57:38 AM
For me it depends on what type of music I'm playing. I like to use a slightly lighter pick (.60) for rhythm based stuff, and I like to use a heavier (1.0) for lead/blues.

I only use Dunlop Tortex pics, and have been since I first started... they're the only ones I know of that won't break. I got a kick out of it when I saw that TR uses the same ones.

personally i love heavy jazz picks. don't know specifics on them, but i used to use fender mediums, and then i fell in love with jazz picks...
