Posted - 09/12/2002 : 03:05:22 AM I asked TR about the downstroke picking and he says it's pretty standard he just angles the pick a little more so it cuts into the strings a little more. He says the problem is that he doesn't really think about "the kind" of picking he uses at any given moment. It is one of those things he does intuitively, out of instinct, to accomplish the sound he wants to hear. He doesn't really pay attention to the which way the pick is at any given moment.
As he never had training in particular ways of picking or fingerpicking, he kind of made up his own way of playing so it is really hard to convey his method to someone else. He wishes he could be more help here but it just wouldn't be easy to convey this way. He says keep practicing, repetition, getting to a point where you don't have to think about it. When you get to a point where you aren't thinking about what your fingers are doing the speed will come. Just keep trying and don't get discouraged. PRACTICE.

Posted - 09/09/2002 : 11:52:33 PM Thanks Fluffy... I guess what I was meaning by tecnique was the more technical aspect of his playing... anything that you can get out of him regarding the way that he picks, both flatpicking and fingerpicking. Especially if there is anything that he does, or has done in the past to condition himself to being able to use his right hand in such a mindnumbingly fast and accurate manner, and furthermore get it to sync up with his left hand so perfectly as it begins to blur. Also, given that he did teach at some point in the past, is there any way we could get the finger exercises that he used to have his students do? I dunno... I have so many questions I really don't know where to start. It's essentially trying to figure out a lifetime of knowledge by asking a couple of questions. I don't suppose he'd be willing to take on an apprentice, would he? :) -J

Posted - 09/09/2002 : 11:12:06 PM Obviously it is a lot easier to ask him a question than just say something like "explain your technique". Plus if I have a more specific question you are more likely to get the answer to your question. I can't guess what you want to know. I am not sure what you mean by technique. Technique on songwriting, strumming, etc etc etc?
But thanx for post whoring pcbdmb!

Posted - 09/09/2002 : 8:20:32 PM BACK TO TOPIC:
Hey NeKAD, I finally got a chance to ask TR about your question and he says he does not have one particular style. He uses what ever works for what he is trying to accomplish. He had never heard of rodeo picking but after reading your description, he says he does use a style similar to that sometimes. He says most of the TIMe he uses something called a downstroke method. He says that is why he wears out picks in one performance. He really cuts into the strings with the pick with this method. Hope this helps clear it up for you.

Posted - 08/09/2002 : 10:27:23 PM I do not know...but I'm sure that someone will be able to give you an idea. I imagine it's more or less what fits the particular song, and what songs he plays would determine which way he picks most often. That's just theory, of course, but it makes pretty much good sense.
Whoa, basically what I just said was that he plays how he plays when he plays that way. So, um, sorry, I can't help you ...
