I've been learning tim's parts on the live at luther college cd and I'm having trouble playing some of the fast parts, and I figured if I knew the right pick it'd maybe help...so that got me thinking which pick he uses in that show. If anyone has information on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I started sharpening my picks after hearing about Chris Whitley doing it...and it's actually quite comfortable. As far as which picks to sharpen down, the green and purple Dunlops are the best, in my opinion...

Contrary to what everyone has posted here, I just went out and got some neon blue Dunlop 1 mm picks, sat down with my guitar and played Something Nasty, without much prior knowledge of how to play the song.

Then the drugs wore off.

It's a thick pick, that 1.0 MM Dunlop. I love them, but they're tough to get used to. I'd doubt that having the same pick will help, as was said, and will probably in fact hinder you more so at first.

django would use fingernails he found on the ground and bits of metal to play...and he was pretty good.

It's not just skills and talent, but what feels right to you. Say theoretically you could be close to as good as Tim, but use a different pick. Using that pick isn't going to do it for ya. If anything, it's going to be difficult to get used to using something different. If you really think you need a different pick, go to the store, try using a bunch of different picks, and don't pay any attention to anything except what feels best to you.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of people actually believe that. I see this question, and questions similar about pedals, guitars, guitar straps, etc... on other DMB message boards all the time. Yes, if you use the same pick, guitar, etc... as your hero you know you're not using a shitty product because they use it, but picks, guitars, and amps are no replacement for skill and talent.

Not that it really matters, but when Tim uses a pick they are usually dunlops. At least that's what I remember reading in the equipment part of this site.
