Posted - 01/04/2005 : 6:04:15 PM You can get just about any weird, spaced out sound with a ring mod. I know Mike Einziger from Incubus has one in his rig (a DOD ring mod, but still), and uses it often. If you listen to some of the stuff from SCIENCE, and the Alive at the Red Rocks DVD, he uses it. You can get anything from a trippy guitar tone to robotic blips, beeps, and drones. |

Posted - 12/25/2004 : 12:32:54 AM The ring modulator sound effects remind me somewhat of those kinds of blips and beeps you can get from an Asteriods arcade machine or Pong, although that's just one general type of the sound effects possible. |

Posted - 12/23/2004 : 8:34:07 PM That would be the rotosphere, which you also hear a bunch on the Puke Matrix live album and Light Up Ahead. If you want to hear TR using the ring modulator, check out Long Distance Caller on NW. |

Posted - 12/23/2004 : 3:07:43 PM Is this was Tim used on the 1998 tour with DMB to get the organ-like sound that he had on some songs. For example, Jimi Thing, on 12/19/98, during Roi's solo.

Posted - 12/23/2004 : 1:33:13 PM Chick corea uses this with his electric band every once in while. It definitely has a cool sound. I don't know how to explain it though other then that. Wait go here to hear it. http://www.moogmusic.com/detail.php?main_product_id=6 Then you can listen to it. And know what it does. |

Posted - 12/23/2004 : 12:33:10 PM "a ring modulator modulates the guitar's volume and then takes the signals sum, and difference of the modulated frequency, and then guitar's frequency and mixes it back in the with the original signal. the result is a metallic ringing sort of sound." - taken from the vgs50 processor from dod. i have no idea what it means, but apparently that's what it does and indeed, there is a metallic ringing sound. |
