Hey I know this has been mentioned a multitude of times, and most of you right away would tell me to search, and realize that no one has a good tab of it, but no one's asked in a while, so it would be good to get updated on this. I'm currently working on a tab for it, kinda scrapping the one currently in the archive because the way in which everything is played doesn't seem logical to me at all (ex. use of open strings and chord shapes), and also since there's only the first minute tabbed. So if anyone has any material on smile, POST AWAY!! I just started my tab tonight just now, but here's what I got..

Smile
By Tim Reynolds

Tabbed by Eric Brightfield

more simplistic, improv open out-take on it.

*NOTE: The chords shown should not often be played wholly, and never strummed. The idea is to give the general melody of the song and the available notes you can use. Listen to the song for the various ways he plays each chord. Timing is not shown, but i broke it down into measures as best I could.

e|----4-5|-7-7-|-7-7-|-4------7-|4--4--2--0--|-0---0-2-4-|-0-|-0-|-0-|
B|-------|-7-7-|-7-7-|-5--5-7---|5--4--2--0--|-0---------|-0-|-0-|-0-|
G|-------|-----|-----|-4--------|4--4--2--1--|-1---------|-4-|-2-|-2-|
D|-------|-----|-----|----------|---4--2--2--|-2---------|-4-|-2-|-2-|
A|-------|---0-|---6-|-4--------|4--------2--|-2---------|---|---|-2-|
E|-------|-0---|-4---|----------|---4--2--0--|-0--0------|-4-|-2-|-0-|

sorry if the font thing didnt work it never seems to for me..

maybe instead I'll concretely tab it based on the Stream album version, or maybe I'll just continue in this more general way. I think a more general tab serves a better purpose, leaving it more open to interpretation and easier to kind of shape to your liking. But send whatever you've got!!

To write it out as a jazz piece you simply figure out the melody first, which would be the notes that you can distinguish clearly as a melody line over the rest of the notes he's playing. That'd be the head, and probably there's an A part and a B, or bridge. The chords played over top would be found using the melody as a guide for key notes (3rds and 7ths) in the chords, and also using the extra notes Tim plays to figure out what chord is being played. I attempted to kind of place what chords he was playing, guessing that the track was entirely played in the key of E, but I'm not so sure about it all now.

I'm not sure how to adapt the piece entirely for how to play it as a jazz piece, but I'm trying to get a feel for how TR plays the piece and then incorporate my own improv into it. I'm just trying to get started and go into the direction where I can capture a fraction of what he is capable of doing with this particular song, since it's just so cool.

Thanks for the positive feedback.

Since this piece is a pretty standard jazz piece, it would be better to tab out a head for it, and then have the changes over it. It just seems most logical to do it that way for anyone taking it from a more jazz-oriented approach rather than trying to play it how Tim does it.

Hell of a job though. I stopped working on mine. I never finish what I start.

Nice stuff. I am always hesitant to tackle Tim's jazz pieces because I never have a good idea of the position he plays his chords in (e.g. : Impermanence). I am working on Breathing Space from 5-5-03 right now, hope to get it out soon.

The rest seems, at least to me, to just be improvs incorporated over the same basic patterns up to about this point in the song.
