I'm not sure on the technique for this song, but I believe TR both slaps the low D with his thumb while opening his fingers and kind of hitting/strumming the other notes with the tips of his fingers and/or nails. It dumbfounds me how he does this so well as it seems as if the slaps and the strums are separate, at least as the timing goes, particularly in the middle portion.
