Does anyone have an opinion on the band Cynic?

I'm thinking Dan could weigh in on this one.

I stumbled across them today because they were listed as having been influenced by John McLaughlin.

It's not quite my style, but it seemed pretty good...at least musically.

i think they're touring with meshuggah, who i really like.

i don't like their vocalist, either. if you're going to do death metal growls, they either have to be really deep and gutteral or very forceful. otherwise you just sound like you're half-assing it. the actual vocal technique for death metal growls is almost exactly like melodic singing. for good death metal vocals see: opeth (guy's got a good singing voice, too.) or decapitated.

cynic is ok. they're huge in the metal scene, but i never really got into them. i think some of the music is overproduced, and some of it is overwrought. the danger, too, when mixing jazz and metal, is getting lumped in with dillinger escape plan's older work. i think some of psyopus's music mixes jazz and metal well, but they're really fucking spastic.

edit: yes, cynic is touring with meshuggah and the faceless. the faceless are garbage.

Interesting stuff. Like the bizarro chords of 'I'm But a Wave to...' Definitely couldn't actively listen to their music though. Can't stand the growling vocal crap.
