Weird and wild.

the reason why james hetfield seems reasonable is because they don't really let him talk. probably because, judging by his singing, he ends every sentence with that "eugh" sound. probably they're concerned it would seem. . .bizarre.

You're a bastion of stoicism, Dan. I can't separate an artist's personality from their music, that is to say, if I know beforehand someone is a dick, I won't listen to their music; likewise, if I find out about an artist's douchebaggery after listening to his tunes, I'll certainly think again before putting his record on again.

Load was a decent record. They (Lars/Kirk) are just fuckheads.

Hetfield seems reasonable, though.

st. anger is the fault of metallica fans. metallica was sick of people bitching about how they weren't any good anymore, and so they said "well let's do this album in the same style as our old stuff." what they, and metallica fans, didn't realize is that 40 year olds cannot thrash. ever. thus st. anger came out and it was awful. people complained when load came out, too. load's a decent cd. it's not strictly 100% metal, though. there's a lot of southern rock stuff there and that's why everyone hates it. ditto reload, with the exception that reload was actually pretty bad. people keep complaining every time they try to do something different. they want cds like master of puppets, ride the lightning, the black album and . . .and justice for all. all great albums, but trying to remake them now results in shit like st. anger.

also kirk hammett is a dick. him and lars ulrich both. but they're good musicians. kirk hammett might be a little formulaic in his solos (wah pentatonic scale, wah off, tapping, chromatic fill, wah on, pentatonic.) but i separate their music and their business practices. that is, they wrote some great music and i honestly don't care about their personal lives or business practices. except for when they flip their bus over.

I guess. From what I understand Kirk Hammett is a massive dick in terms of personality and that shit they pulled with Napster was very poor outing, indeed.

Yeah, I wasn't disagreeing with your statement that they are a disgrace to musicians and the music industry, but for me that has more to do with the Napster/music sharing bullshit than their music. Yeah St. Anger was a giant turd but that isn't the reason why a lot of people hate them.

metallica has several truly excellent songs.

Very true. But they have definitely declined since those songs were written/released. They are still one of my favorite bands though.

I have to say that this country artist doesn't contribute to derelict adolescents, Emmy Lou Harris. She is a beautiful intelligent singer and songwriter. I agree modern country pretty much sucks, but old school country like Emmy Lou Harris does is great.

HAHA! Thanks, Dan. Seriously, I'll check that out.

I just think it's kind of funny because I've never heard of any of those people or bands. I'm probably about as non-metal as you can get.

I did see Metallica once...does that count?
dan p. Posted - 02/08/2008 : 5:03:17 PM
yeah, it's cd called "touched by the crimson king" by demons & wizards. it's not quite a concept album of dark tower but it's close. tracks 1, 3, 5, and 6 are about dark tower. one other one is about oscar wilde's the picture of dorian grey. there's one about moby-dick and one about wicked.

demons & wizards is actually a side project of blind guardian's vocalist and iced earth's guitar player. it's pretty standard power metal fare. a lot of great vocal arrangments, too. i suggest looking into "love's tragedy asunder" which is about roland and susan, "the gunslinger," "touched by the crimson king" which is mostly about flagg, and "terror train" if you're feeling particularly metal.
Arthen Posted - 02/08/2008 : 3:19:14 PM
I was gonna say, is number ten that metal band that does Dark Tower based songs...cause I want it. Bad.
gnome44 Posted - 02/08/2008 : 3:03:12 PM
Dan, may I ask what you're listening to that is about The Gunslinger?

I'm a total Dark Tower dork (and probably a dork in general)...
dan p. Posted - 02/08/2008 : 2:22:49 PM
bullshit. explain the millions upon millions of people who listen to music but don't act out anything in it. here's a quick test for me. i'm going to put my winamp play list on random ten times and see what the song's about:

1. murder.
2. drinking alone and then walking around all bummed out
3. murder again.
4. whatever peter gabriel's "signal to noise" is about
5. irresponsible sex
6. a song making fun of a guy who goes to jail for stealing their equipment.
7. lord of the rings
8. goddamn it, it's murder again
9. a guy in a coma engaged in a struggle with pride, fear, agony, passion, reason and pride, each personified and portrayed by a different vocalist. the different emotions argue with each other.
10. roland deschain and susan delgado.

oh wait. i'm not sure this proved my point.
