There's a site: www.stickdeath.com that's the same thing. Some of them are really funny, but mostly just dumb.

Have you ever done "Hell Drwaings" while in high school?

It's where you draw a stick figure, animal, something alive on a piece of paper and hand it to a friend. That person then draws another living creature on the paper killing your original creature in some for or another then passes it back. You continue on, killing eachothers' creatures and people intil someone does something completely nutty that just kills everything, or if you run out of room on the paper :)

Stick Figure Death Theatre is somethign a friend showed me when I was in high school. The way I ususally get to it is by using a search engine like Google, or Alta Vista, etc.. and search for Stick Figure Death Theatre. There are a few decent sites out there if you look for em. And the movoes are actually animated GIFS. Some of them are pretty funny, and just feature stick figures dying in various inorthodox circumstances.

Theres also and "adult" stick figure theatre, but we wont go there....hehe.

Hey Tericee ... I'm a web developer for one of the largest credit card companies in the world (3rd largest actually). I'm well aware of 'bandwith theft' and I'm willing to take my chances.

In most cases, people that are very concerned about others sucking up their bandwith can implement software, or hardware that will prevent this. Many web hosting companies have already invested in this technology.

Will someone sue you? Most likely not. They will 99% of the time send you an email, or the site administrator of the referring site asking to remove all references to said images. If you, or the site admin don't comply, then they may threaten legal action - but that's hardly the case, unless youre a real prick about using their images.

Other times, people are quite happy that you use their images as it promotes their site in some form or another. Like the image in my signature for example, it promotes a good cause - a worth cause in fact. But, I do see your point, and going forward I will also have a hyperlink to the site in which I am 'stealing' the bandwith from for the image in my signature.

Question of the Day: where are your smileys stored? Here's some geeky, but important, information about Bandwidth Theft.

Background: Yahoo! provides a homesteading service known as Geocities. I use it, along with AOL, as one of my website hosts. I found out today, however, that Geocities has some way of preventing images from their servers from being used as inline graphics on other pages. I have some images at http://www.geocities.com/tericee/photos.html that you can see perfecty well, but when I tried to put one of them in my signature file, it came up as a broken image.

After doing a little research, I realized their reason for blocking such use is to minimize what is known as bandwidth theft. Here is a short explanation of this phenomenon from http://www.darkmountain.com:

"Lets say you want to put my FREE Link Button on your web page. Rather than download the graphic and placing it on your own server, you could just link directly to the image on Dark Mountain. This way, anytime someone views your page, it draws the image you linked to from my server to your web page, eating up a small chunk of MY bandwidth!

Now lets say 1000 people do the same thing! Every time one of their pages is downloaded, more and more of my bandwidth is used. Eventually, it adds up and could start to cost me some serious cash to host those graphics for all those other people to use! In this way, bandwidth bandits have been responsible for shutting-down more than one web site, either from misuse or abuse!

Unfortunately, most bandwidth bandits aren't even aware that this is a problem! Usually a bandit is just someone who gets their web page hosted for free (either from work, school, or some online service) and only gets a few visitors every week. The amount of data transferred from their site is too small for them to even worry about what bandwidth is. Usually they're new to the web and therefore don't see the harm in linking to someone else's stuff.

Can anything bad happen to me for stealing bandwidth?

You bet! There are a variety of problems that could result from linking to other people's stuff..

Broken Images. If the file you linked to is ever moved, renamed, or deleted from the server, you'll never know! The result will be a homepage full of broken images. If you save the files to your own server, nobody but you can touch them!

Longer Download Times. Telling a web browser to draw files from multiple servers can make your homepage take forever to load! When you link to servers other than your own, web browsers have to waste time that could have been spent downloading looking for the new server. This can really slow down or even halt the loading time of your own web page(s).

You Could Get Sued! If your misuse of the internet costs someone else hundreds of thousands of dollars, you better believe their gonna come calling!"

So, if you're using somebody else's bandwidth to fill your signature with cute images, you might want to find out whether they have their own intellectual property lawyer...

In college, I was in a sorority called Sigma Kappa. Our motto is "One Heart One Way." It is graphically depicted using 1's, a heart and an arrow. When I first discovered animated gifs, I thought it would be cool to try to make one myself, so I experimented with the motto.

Here are some that I didn't create, but that I like.

Stick Figure Theater was a regular feature on MTV's Liquid Television. They also featured a couple of animations by a classmate of mine named Bob Sabiston. He did one call "Evil Screaming Death." It was cool. He was the animation director for the new Linklater movie called "Waking Life." (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0243017)

Hey Adam, I vaguely recall something like that, but wasn't it called just "Stick Figure Theatre"? What was it from? That is so familiar. Just can't place it.
