Hey I added some videos from a show my band had a few weeks ago. Check it out it you like.

"Banshee"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=U2-BKNsdCcs

"War"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Q-LJyLSCzRg

The audio for War is stuffy so here are the lyrics so you can sing along at home!

War, what is it good for?
War, who is it made for?
Lies, fill up their heads with lies...
Lies, the TV hypnotize

Is this your way of being afraid?
Are you waiting for a place to hide?

Dead, millions and millions slain...
Dead, while the oil men get paid...
TV, molding your opinion...
TV, it's a great demon...

Is this your way of being afraid?
Are you waiting for a place to hide?

You are wrong, if you support war.
You are blind, if you support war,
they are rich, those who create wars,
we are slaves...and we fight the wars.

Is this...
Your way...

Is this your way of being afraid?
Are you waiting for a place to hide?
Is this your way of being afraid?

Thanks for all the info. I'll give that stuff a try after the weekend (I'm away from my looping gear while visiting some people). I've been looking for something new to try anyway...maybe I'll really get into this. I really appreciate it.

And by the way...did you mean "funk" instead of "ginl"? "ginl" is exactly one key right of every letter in "funk". HAHA

I think it's more of the rhythm rather then the chord choices. Django used a lot of triads because of his damamged hand.

For instance, in Banshee, I am using mostly minor chords to switch up the key. I am in F#minor but then goto Gminor and Aminor, rather then switching to major for the G and A. This allows me to play pretty much any note, essentially. I like gypsy jazz, my half assed style anyway, because I feel able to play whatever I want without it being "wrong". This isn't always the case, but a lot of times I have so much freedom to make a cool melody.

But yea the rhythm is what defines gypsy jazz. i always compare the differences between ginl and jazz being this...

The funk downbeat is always on the 1 and 3. Gypsy jazz is on the 2 and 4. understand?

A cool way to practice is to try this 1,4,5 setup...

Am....Dm....E7 (or Emin7b5 if you want) then Am again then start over....Try playing over that. I'll make you a mix this weekend.

Yeah, thanks man, that'd be great! Pick whatever you think is best!

In the meantime...what's a good vamp to play a gypsy-style solo to? And what kinds of scales are used? I assume it's somewhat different than most of the American modal jazz. As you can tell, I'm pretty ignorant of the whole gypsy-genre.

I could zip up some mp3s and upload them for ya? I'll make a nice mix if you want? Django has some twisted songs, especially for that long ago, like experimental but lo-fi experimental...I love it it is really neat and can be very dark.

I really liked "Banshee". I couldn't hear much of "War", so I can't really give my opinion.

You know, I've always been on the fence of whether I really like gypsy jazz. I've never really given it enough of a chance...I'm usually too busy listening to and/or studying other stuff. Regardless, I think that after hearing some of your songs, Dave, that I'm going to buy a few gypsy CDs.

There are so many guitarists that I love who were strongly influenced by Django. Any thing in particular that you would recommend.

I guess what I don't like about gypsy is all the violin. I want guitar. Just guitar. Maybe bass...maybe drums. But mostly guitar.

I was hoping for a rousing cover of Edwin Starr's "War".

Dratted again.

J/K. Looks good, brother Dave, looking good.
