For those of you who are also big fans, my son and I saw his show at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, outside Philly, last night. Amazing, amazing show! The time flew by. If you get a chance try to catch a show, you won't be disappointed!

All you young guys would love Vyvienne Long who plays the cello. Not only is she an accomplished musician, hitting each note perfectly (I have a thing for the cello, one of my favorite instruments), but midway through the show she did a rap song with a guy (Derek) who works at the venue and it was hilarious! Apparently he was listening to the sound check and had a conversation with her and she asked him to join her on stage. It was a moment we will never forget!

Of course Lisa Hannigan was wonderful too, I absolutely love her voice and she and Damien compliment each other so well! They are perfect together.

Tom Osander on drums blew us away, most of the time he is very subtle on the drums, but he has some moments that he just lets loose and wow, what a sound he makes!

Shane Fitzsimons on bass was good too, although he stayed pretty much in the background.

Damien explains many of his songs and has a lot of interaction with the crowd, at one point he had everyone whistling, it was pretty cool to experience. The whole vibe, especially being at the Tower which is a very old and intimate venue, with painted glowing "stars" on the ceiling was mind blowing.

It was truly a night my son and I will never forget!

He's coming to Stuttgart (or somewhere nearby) in July!! I saw a poster in my neighborhood when I was driving to work last week.

I'll see if I can get tickets.

I feel the same, on both counts. My son and I were talking about the show again last night and it still blows our minds how the same band can sound so different, with both performances being equally great. I missed Lisa's voice, but the band was so "edgy" without her, the music rocked big time! I am definitely buying tickets to see them whenever they come back to Philly again.

That really doesn't say much. I mean during the Wall recordings, you could have said the same thing between Roger Waters and Rick Wright (and he threatened to take all the tapes, and there would be no album if Rick didn't leave the band after the completion of the album).

There were supposed arguments between Damien and Lisa over air conditioners at one venue. It is said Damien didn't like the noise they were making, and wanted them off. Lisa knew the crowd would be too hot and wanted them on. Now that is a rumor, but she didn't play that night, and the air conditioners were off.

So until someone really speaks up from that group, we won't know what really went on. I will really miss Lisa's voice, though.

I agree Ben, I love her voice. Here is what was posted on Damian's website back in March, although I think it sounds like there was more to it, but whatever, it is their personal business.

Band update - 25 Mar 2007
After much thought and discussion Damien has decided that his professional relationship with Lisa Hannigan has run its creative course. As a result Lisa will not be appearing at any of the upcoming live shows. Lisa is embarking on her own artistic endeavours and there are no plans for them to work together in the foreseeable future. The current band on tour at the moment are - Damien Rice, Joel Shearer, Shane Fitzsimons, Tom Osander & Vyvienne Long.

Thanks for the review Pam! That's really too bad about Lisa because I'm madly in love with her voice, especially on songs like Blower's Daughter and 9 Crimes.
PJK Posted - 05/25/2007 : 06:34:01 AM
I don't think he really peed on the post, just alluded to doing that, you couldn't really tell from where we were sitting (6th row), it was pretty funny though. Best encore ever! That show was going through my head all night as I slept so I had a great nights sleep too, LOL.

I agree, very sad about Lisa and yeah, not sure what to make of the rumors. It's their private lives so I can respect that. I missed her singing on some of the songs, but without her, there was more musical expression so it was all good. I am just glad I got to see her perform with the band at least one time. I think I missed Vyvienne more than Lisa last night. I think she is playing most of this tour though, just not last nights show.

It wasn't a sold out show, but I think a lot of the US shows are, I know the DC one is. This was a bigger venue than the Tower Theatre where I saw him last fall. That was a sold out show.

Yeah, it's sad Lisa is out (and it might be the end of their friendship too, but rumors fly fast so I don't know exactly what to think of that). But him peeing on a lamp post, that just doesn't seem like something that Damien would do. Kewl, though.

Just got home from seeing Damian Rice and all I can say is Wow! This time it was without Lisa and Vyvienne. He is no longer working with Lisa, but I am guessing Vyvienne was busy somewhere working on other projects because she does still tour with his band.

The music was more edgy, heavier on the drums, more bass and with another guitarist. Very different presentation than the show last fall, but equally awesome.

The encore was the most original I have ever seen by anyone. They put a table with a glass of wine and a candle and two chairs and he sat down and drank, smoked and sang "Cheers Darling." One of the guys put on an apron and acted like a waiter filling up his glass several times during the song. Afterwards he went to the back of the stage where a street lamp type prop was and peed on the post.....or alluded to that, we were all talking about whether he really peed or not, LOL. It was such a great encore!

Ben, he played all the great songs, Coconut Skins, Blowers Daughter, Volcano, Delicate, and of course Eskimo Friends. I can't remember all he played, but it went so fast.

The venue was the Mann Center in Philly, which is a really nice outdoor venue. What a great way to spend a warm spring night!

I think we're a go for an Oakland show! Thanks for posting this Pam!
tericee Posted - 02/26/2007 : 09:34:04 AM
Well darn, I would have liked to go to the Strasbourg, France, show, but it appears to be sold out. It would have been the perfect ending to a week-long ski trip in France. Grrr...

thanks eric, I have been watching all the youtube videos of that night as well as some others. I just can't seem to get enough Damien Rice in my life right now, LOL! My particular favorite is 9 crimes. I love Volcano too. Let's face it, I am a huge fan of all "his" music. If they come back for a spring tour I am definitely going to try to get tickets.

I wanted to go to this show so bad. There are some videos from the show up on youtube.
PJK Posted - 12/17/2006 : 9:35:51 PM
He played Cannonball, but I don't remember if he played The Professor or not.

Teri I promise you, you will love him! He puts on the best show. I still hear the concert playing in my mind! Before my company arrived today I was listening to his CD over and over again. Like I said, the people who accompany him are amazing as well. Lisa and Damien sound so perfect together, and again, I am so partial to Vyvienne on the cello!
tericee Posted - 12/17/2006 : 5:06:26 PM
I'll try to see him when he's here in Germany!
Arthen Posted - 12/17/2006 : 4:57:08 PM
Do you remember if he played either Cannonball or The Professor? Those are two of my favorite DR songs. I wish he would have more shows available for download, but, I guess I'll have to keep waiting.
PJK Posted - 12/17/2006 : 08:33:19 AM
He sang Blowers Daughter for his final song.

I am still feeling great from that show! I would have liked to have heard "Delicate" but he did sing Cold Water and Eskimo. That concert flew by! He played so many songs but the time still flew by, when he said good-night it was heart breaking! I felt like screaming NOOOOOO at the top of my lungs. Again, in a small venue with a sold out crowd, it was just so incredible. I feel real lucky to have gotten tickets for that show. I think his whole US tour was sold out.

Ranting Thespian Posted - 12/17/2006 : 12:19:30 AM
Damien and his gang are just one thing

GREAT

Even when I am singing and playing the Blower's Daughter on my guitar, I just have such a powerful feeling.
PJK Posted - 12/16/2006 : 9:27:17 PM
Ben, you would probably really like the opener too, a group called The Swell Season. They don't have a website but do have a myspace. Yep, both my son and I are still on a musical high from last nights show.
Arthen Posted - 12/16/2006 : 6:46:50 PM
I'm inevitably jealous of you Pam! I absolutely love Rice in every aspect of his music, but especially his voice and words. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a chance to cross paths with him over here soon.
