Alright, so I am crazy about cataloguing my audio and shit. Recently (just with my new laptop), even if I rename everything and move it into my music folder after setting the files' properties to Archive, it still fucking retitles them and stuffs them back into a Unknown Artist Folder when the computer restarts. It's fucking pissing me off, and I know it's fucking Media Player.

Anyone else have any good free ripping software? I used to use Audiocatalyst, but I lost the prog and crack for it.

Actually, he broke up with me. But maybe you're right... maybe it's because I didn't use RealPlayer!

I've been a PC user for 15 years, I think I'll stick with it.

At least you admit to porn. Good man.

My problems are solved by John S, anyway. Thanks all.

iTunes can eat it.

there's probably a selection in Media Player that says something like "give access to rename files" (definately not exact, but in that vein). Maybe it's checked by default and you need to uncheck it...

Itunes does this to me too, gnome... BUT, I let it. It's sort of a nice thing IF (big if) I notice it (which I usually do). When I notice it, I go to the mp3 (or file) and appropriately fill out the data fields, and then tell Itunes to go back and look in that folder again... it'll see files and now they're appropriately labeled, and they'll go into the folder I want them in, but they'll do it automatically (which in my mind, is better than manually).

*edit to say I don't use Media player except for porn, so I don't know really what the settings are. But there probably is one that will prevent this from happening.

Use iTunes. Or is that only free if you buy an iPod? If it's free, use it. If it's not, I'm an idiot.
