So, with Disclocation Blues right around the corner, I decided I needed to get as much Chris Whitley material as possible, since little to no new material may ever be released. I put down the $25 and ordered the special edition of Rocket House from Fargo Records. I finally got it today in the mail, straigt from Paris, no less! The bonus disc has:
1. To Joy (radio edit)
2. Radar (radio edit)
3. Radar (recorded live @ the Bowery Ballroom, NY July 10th, 2001)
4. Timebomb Baby (outtake from Rocket House sessions)
5. Say Goodbye (acoustic version)
6. Vertical Desert (acoustic version)
7. Invisible Day (acoustic, previously unreleased)
8. Breaking Your Fall (acoustic, previously unreleased)
9. Shadowlands (acoustic, previously unreleased)
10. Rocket House (acoustic version)
The bonus disc is amazing. The live version of Radar is simply stellar. Great sound quality and mix. Timebomb Baby sounds like it could be off of Soft Dangerous Shores, very percussively heavy, like Medicine Wheel. The acoustic versions are awesome, very much like the stuff off of Weed with better sound quality, with the guitars sounding much warmer. Breaking Your Fall is a real gem, so is Shadowlands.
Anyways, it is bittersweet getting more CW stuff, as I know it is a very finite resource.

First off, let me 2nd the sentiments that Chris Whitley was the perfect person to perform (mostly to sing) Dylan songs. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to Spanish Harlem Incident, and 4th Time Around off Perfect Day. I think they are the most beautiful songs ever when sung by Chris, and a million times prettier than when sung by Dylan himself. So with that said of course I really love their version of Changing of the Guards. To review the cd is really tough for me. Chris was one of my favs, and I've been getting into Jeff Lang recently, so obviously I like the cd. However at the same time, I'm having a tough time really listening to the disc, probably just because I know it is the last newly recorded material that will come out. So that's all I've got for now, I'll be sure to post more thoughts as they come.
A little more on Dylan though, I know Dan Whitley mentioned the possibility of a big time CW tribute release in the future featuring major artists, so I suppose the chance exists that Mr. Dylan might perform a Whitley track since we know he was a fan. Let's hope. |

Those two guys are bad ass. The rythym on the entire HVH album is first rate. You'll definitely have to let us know what they think of TR's version Fluff. |

Thanx Kev, I make take you up on that. I am going to have a look around Boulder tomorrow and see if I can locate it. If not, I will be in touch. TR's version of Hotel Vast Horizon is getting better with each performance. I think CW would have really liked it. I look forward and hope I have the opportunity to play it for Heiko and Mattias who recorded on CW's version. I think they will love it as well, even though there are no drums or bass in TR's version. hehe |

Fluffy, I made sure that Virgin carries the import, looking at your tour dates, There are stores in Orlando, and Dnever, those are the only ones you are close to. Or I can get one for anyone, they are $24.99 I think.

He was the perfect person to sing Dylan songs, I agree. He had an amazingly beautiful voice, and could get real with it in a way that is hard for me to put words to. "Din" really is a good example IMO. Listen to "God thing" and you'll understand what I mean. Peace, Robin |

Kev, have you gotten your copy of DB yet? I'm really interested to hear what you think about it. I've been listening to "Changing of the Guard" nonstop the past three days, I think it's the most beautiful recording of CW's voice. In fact, if I had a time machine and limitless amounts of money, I'd have CW record every Bob Dylan song ever. He's the perfect person to sing Dylan songs. |

Well, I got my copy of Dislocation Blues tonight. I've been tearing up listen to it, that's never ever happened before. Not even when I got the last Elliott Smith album. Hearing Chris' voice stirs something inside of me. Definitely my new favorite version of Rocket House. Haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but I can't wait to get home from class tomorrow to sit in my easy chair and listen to it. I miss CW a lot right now.
On a quick note, for you Deadwood fans, Motion Bride should be one of the credit songs to an episode of Deadwood. It's that kind of tone and emotion. I love it. |

Arthen, that bonus disc is amazing! I didn't know you didn't already have it. Glad to hear that you are enjoying it.
BTW, there was a new show that was just posted on Chris' message board that is AMAZING quality, and an amazing show from what I've heard so far. I just burned it to disc, and plan on listening to it in the car today, but you should really check it out:
