Posted - 06/15/2006 : 12:30:07 PM Michael Coppola Plays a nine-string guitar, not tuned similarly to any other guitarist you've heard. I believe it goes E B G D D A D A E, with strings 5 and 6 tuned a to the D and A a whole-step apart from string 1 and 2's E and B. The top four strings and bottom 3 strings are tuned in the common octaves found on the 6 string guitar. The extra strings enable him to play lines and voicings like a piano player would, closed voicings without the annoying and cumbersome stretches.
Perhaps another guy you've never heard of is Tom Shinness. He plays the guitar-harp. I can't even really describe the thing well, you'll just have to click the website and see for yourself. Wonderful colors and textures coming from his instrument. http://www.tomshinness.com/
