I know this is a pretty cliche topic to post on a music-related forum, but I'm always looking for inspirational guitarists.

My personal favorites at the moment are:
TR of course, thats a given

Ralph Towner
has such an intriguing sense of harmony, and wild chord melodies

John Mclaughlin
will never get old to me, especially My Goals Beyond(1970)

Al Di Meola, JM, and Paco de Lucia
i know thats three guys, but their trio albums are fucking nuts.

Martin Taylor
awesome name, even more awesome chord melodies. his cover of day tripper is sexy

Yeah, and inevitably the same names come up. It's nice though, because every time I get around to checking out one or two of the names, and getting into new people. Which becomes bad, because then I spend too much money buying their back catalogue.

And lets not forget the king of slide and amazing melancholy vocals: Chris Whitley. I remember when I first started listening to him, it was songs off of Rocket House and Living With the Law where his guitar was a part of the whole sound and didn't distinctly stand out. Then I got Live at Martyrs and on Home Is Where You Get Across I was so blown away at how fast he was playing, how steady and consistent it was, and how amazing he sang over it. Now I've got all of his albums and he's permanently in my top five artists, in that pantheon of Ben's favorite musicians: PG, Genesis, TR, Chris Whitley, etc.

I didn't love his voice, but his harmonically sonic All Along the Watchtower is one of my faves.

For some reason I got sick of hedges. Probably just because I listened to his albums like 824923 times in a row...

For the umpteenth time:

Steve Hackett - master of both prog rock and classical guitar. He composes some of the best contemporary classical music that I have heard.
