Maybe some of you already know this maybe some of you don't, it's definitely worth checking out. So here's the back story. When I worked at a record store, me and my friends would always make up silly acapella versions of our fave songs. I always loved acapella covers and thought it would be alot of fun to to an acapella cover album of Frank Zappa songs. My friends and I joked that the most ambitious of our undertakings should be "Black Page". For anyone who has heard "Black Page" by Zappa, you can only imagine, as we did. LOL

So I meet this guy Ben at a TR show in CO a little over a year or so ago and unbeknowst to me he has a website with acapella covers(and lots more)of DMB. You should take a minute and check it out. It's quite impressive. Check out DMB "Bartender", sounds like some Ladysmith Black Mambazo type stuff from Paul Simon "Graceland". Speaking of which he does an acapella cover of Paul Simon as well. The reason I mention it is because he just contacted me asking if he could post some of his CELLO covers of TR material. Of course I said yes so we can be watching for those to pop up. Here's the link, take a sec and check it out. ENJOY!!!

Hey Ben! Long time no see.

Just listened to your Last Stop. WOW! I think this now rivals with your Dreaming Tree (which has always been my favorite of yours). I'd like to take your Last Stop and add some vocals and acoustic guitar to it, if you don't mind.

Hey everyone! It's been awhile. How's everyone doing??

So I found this awesome website (bandcamp.com) that lets you make your music available for streaming or for download for free. Here is my Tim Reynolds channel...

http://benpezzner.bandcamp.com/album/tim-reynolds

It's got a couple new things in there, You Are My Sanity on piano and Rheginos and the Resurrection on cello!

Enjoy,

Hey guys, it's been a while. It had occured to me that I have some recordings here I haven't posted for you yet. A few months ago Tim came to San Diego so I recorded some tracks for him.

On the disc were three tracks that I took off TR's Stream CD with me "accompanying" him on the piano. The third was And Then They Were Free, which I already posted here, and lastly there was a new recording of As Far As We Can See, which strays a little bit more from the actual piece.

Here they are:

I was checking out your "specs" page and I have that exact same laptop. It rocks for music stuff.

Folks, I just spent $550 and bought myself some nice recording equipment (before I was using cheap computer mics/headphones and plugging directly into the comp's soundcard).

Check it out! www.pezshow.com/studio.html

The mixer and interface are in the mail... once they arrive, get ready for some great sounding recordings!

Thanks Fluffy... do you know if Tim is listening to any of these?

What I did for the drums was I recently purchased a collection of drum 500 loops and samples. I took the track from the album and figured out which drums were playing, when they were playing, and the different patterns, and I basically copied it drum hit for drum hit, painting on each sample one snare at a TIMe, one cymbal at a TIMe, one tom at a TIMe, etc etc. The end result was an almost exact copy of the beat track from the album, but I think it sounds more realistic since it wasn't done with a drum machine, rather drum samples recorded in a studio on a real drum set. I also screwed with the levels and timing of some of the hits to make it sound more realistic, like someone was actually hitting the drum with a stick (like, it would be impossible to sit there at the high hat and hit it with the exact same volume and with the exact same TIMe interval, down to the millisecond, between each hit).

Here's a screenshot from my program that shows each sampled drum:
www.benpezzner.com/pictures/DrumSamples.jpg

Was it a lot of work? Yes. Was it a waste of TIMe? Absolutely not. I used the same method that I perfected for Torch in this original work I just recorded for Legoland's upcoming pirate show: www.benpezzner.com/legoland/Pirates2.mp3

Ben
Fluffy Posted - 06/03/2006 : 4:31:22 PM
ToRch is sounding AWESOME! I have a question though, you mentioned that the "sampled" drums took you a while, so are they a sample(sampled from an existing recording) or did you play the parts on keys, how exactly did you do the drum parts? Pardon my naivety. Just curious.
BenPezzner Posted - 06/02/2006 : 5:09:35 PM
Hey, so I got hooked up with this job to compose original music for an upcoming pirate show for Legoland, just in case anyone was interested in listening to some of the finished products: www.benpezzner.com/legoland

I'd listen to the second one first... it was done in the same style as my Torch cover - lots of cellos and sampled drums (the drumming took me forever!)

Enjoy,
Ben

ps: now it's time to finish up the rest of torch... booyah

No I actually don't because I am not too well versed in any instrument. That is why I figured "my version"(if I was to do a version) would make you feel a whole lot better about your version. LOL I was trying to say "don't be to hard on yourself" because those of us who can barely lay fingers to strings think it's pretty damn impressive. Keep up the great work!

I was blown away by the sound and the versatility. I've even taken it, put it inside a cardbaord box, and banged on it to make a drum track. With some adjustments to the mic and to the recording, it sounded like a big hand drum. VERY realistic. My Dad got it for me for a x-mas present a few years ago. It would work wonderfuly on your cello pieces. I think it's just under $300. A little pricey, but if you take care of it, it will last a VERY long time.

Hmmm... maybe I should make an album and sell 30 copies for ten bucks each. But seriously, thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely keep it in mind (for when that album comes out!).

Yes, what I meant by "would never approve" was I'm not in tune half the time, and it's in general messy... gotta clean it up! But I totally dig what you're talking about making covers your own. As I progressed with my keyboard TR covers, with each one I started throwing in more of my own stuff and less of his. Speaking of which, do you know if he ever listened to that CD?

In other news, for anyone who is interested, I've been posting almost nightly recordings of what I do for 5-10 minutes before I go to bed. Basically, I sit down at the keyboard (with the looping pedal of course) and play whatever comes to mind. Here's an example: www.BenPezzner.com/bedtime/Bedtime01.mp3

If anyone's interested, the thread is here: http://www.dmbtabs.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=29365

Fluffy Posted - 05/22/2006 : 01:22:24 AM
I am not so sure TR "would never approve". Hell, have a listen to one of his covers of someone else. He really makes them his own, as I think you did with your "loose interpretation"(pardon the pun) of Torch. Do what you are comfortable with, if you want to make changes, go for it. Do what makes the song feel right for U. I have always thought of a cover as sort of a tribute to the artist you are covering, there is certainly nothing wrong with making it your own. I think that's at the heart of the creative spirit. You want to feel alot better about your version? You should hear my version someTIMe. LOL

Wow... thanks so much! I really have to go back and re-record some parts. I think I may have gone a little overboard with the distortion towards the end there, and other parts are just plain sloppy. TIM would never approve! After my midterm on Thursday I'll have TIMe to go back and fix things/finish it.

Wow, what a beautiful compliment... I am honored. Dreaming Tree is my favorite cello recording, and for some reason I cannot seem to duplicate that sound. I used a crappy computer-mic-in-a-sock combo and set the levels just right. I find it harder to get that raw cello sound with more expensive mics and pickups, so maybe one day I'll go back to that crappy computer mic.

Anyway, for anyone who was wondering, I've been studying for midterms and haven't had a chance to finish the first part of Torch yet. I'm thinking next weekend I'll have more time.

Until next time,

So I met up with Tim after the show on 4/20, and he said he liked my Stream, but the meter was off. So I went ahead and recorded another take. This still is no means my best work, although I've fixed some of the timing issues. Stay tuned for the next one (I'm currently learning how to play it with both hands at the same time to get that 12-string effect)...

I'm leaving for New York for a week (spring break) so Alpha Wave will have to wait until I get back on Sunday. For now though, here's a recording I made last night with two singers in my acapella group and myself.

Honestly Ben, next time I see Tim, I'll give him a CD of your shit, I am sure he'd be honored and impressed. As much as you sound like you enjoy playing Tim's music, I am sure you guys could do something together. Shit, Marcus Eaton got to play You Are My Sanity with Tim on stage, at the very least, when Tim is near your area, I am sure you could open up for him.

But anyway, enough smoke up your ass...here's the link, both songs were played at this show:
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=7285&from=dbetreeDetails

You may want to get the Stream version of Smile, as you may find it better to work with. ATTWF is pretty standard though.
BenPezzner Posted - 03/24/2006 : 6:31:28 PM
Interesting... I'll have to check out Radiohead. You think Tim would do a collaboration with a random college guy posting piano covers on his message board? Sounds kinda random to me, but wow, that would be freakin amazing...

So I'll do Alpha Wave next, but for the second guitar part I'll do it with the cello. Can you send me Smile and ATTWF? I'm sure I have them but my tracks aren't labeled with song titles. ATTWF is one of my favorites as well.

Thanks,

Well, Pezzman, again you have triumphed. You are like the Christopher O'Reilly of Tim Reynolds (he does splendid covers of Radiohead songs on piano) You should try to talk to Tim about a collaboration, like him and Soko did, you clearly have the talent. Hmm...TR songs...

Try Alpha Wave? That'd be tough cause it's 2 guitars, but maybe you could work something out...no live version of this though, it's on the Parallel Universe album. If you want me to email you a copy, I'd be glad to.

Meanwhile, if you wanna try Smile or And Then They Were Free, that would be awesome, of all the TR songs, they are probably the 2 favorites round these parts. I can get you links to live versions if you need them.

Keep kicking ass, man.

Now that I have a portable media from which to play your tunes, I'll conjur up some new fans and then you can start touring Western Pennsylvania.

I'm listening to Ben Pezzner Chello1 2-2-06 and there's some portions that sound like the Diablo1 town theme. I understand that it was originally writen for and mostly played on guitar so a musical colaberation for it would be great too.

It's mostly wishful thinking so tell me to go suck a rock if I'm asking too much.

are you into Radiohead at all. that would make for some sick renditions. Just a thought. Either way you dominate.

hehe, see how much faster Ben saw your request when I transferred to this thread. Folks lets keep the board tight, the search engine will work much better and faster if the board is more organized. Try to post on threads concerning the topic being discussed if there is one. Whatever you do, KEEP POSTING!! THANX

Wow... I don't know what I'd do with myself if I ever got that invite... probably have a heart attack. Anyway, here's the track from BTCS layered on top of the cello track for Dreaming Tree. This is close to what you are asking for since you can hear Dave's voice with the cellos.

Sounds great. Dave's voice from the album wasn't quite as BOLD as the cello music. Although it works together rather well. It just seems that Dave meant to blend his voice with the music in the original, but with a cello he'd need to sing out more. I mean I'm still enjoying this version (and the first mentioned cello version) A LOT. Really what I'm saying is that this only makes me want to hear it live.

<-- Listening to Ben's Dreaming Tree on Cello..

I was originally taking a day off from the usualy message board flooding. I was about to start arguing religion last night. I realized what i had to say wasn't funny and therefore I didn't want to associate myself with that comment. I have to break my TRMB Fast for today to comment on this Ben music piece.

FREAKING AWESOME

I love the original song but you managed to do it 10 times better. (thats a tough one because I generally hate remakes)

Very good stuff.. I'd like to point out 1 thing and that is there are more accapella songs listed than done by instrument. I had found a viewable folder full of piano music that i downloaded the crap out of today with even more. You should consider giving an easier link to it.
http://www.benpezzner.com/piano

I do have a question:
Isn't Tony Dowe the guy who played Wally on Leave it to Beaver?

So I have benpezzner.com pointing to my music page, pezshow.com/music, and all of the categories on my music page are actually pages on the benpezzner site. That means there are benpezzner.com/piano, benpezzner.com/acapella, benpezzner.com/cello, etc, etc. Any song that is posted in one of these pages eventually makes it over to the pezshow music page within a day or two. But yeah, if it's easier to just check each benpezzner.com page then by all means go right ahead!

Tony Dowe is a fellow Tim/Dave fan who contacted me through my website and every now and then sends me his original music to embellish with the cello. If you like I can post his IM name.

Ben

btw, which tim song would you like to hear next?

Wow, thanks for the compliments. During my last show I played Stream-->AFAWCS (on the piano/cello) and it lasted for about 20 minutes. It was a hit. I got another show on Wednesday so I'll try to get someone to record it.

As for my cello cover of Stream, I started fiddling around on the piano right before I started recording, and before I knew it I had taught myself Stream on the piano (took about 20 minutes). So I having a recording of the piano version of Stream, but be forewarned it's rough around the edges. I'll post it in its own thread.

Thanks. If a run is slurred it's probably because I was playing it too fast, and on a keyboard with semi-weighted keys. The lightness of the keys makes it easier to play quickly, but sometimes I just play it too fast. I'll try and slow it down next time.

I listened to that guy's stuff from that boat link as well. His a capella stuff is weird, Sugar Will piano is cool too. I got the Stream on now, I dig it, I wonder if his runs are a little slurred cause he's Cecil Taylor good, or just tough to translate to piano...sounds awesome either way, however. The end of the jam right before the 2nd theme, is dope, very abrupt. Cool work, Pezzman!

I'd like to hear Ethan Iverson and friends (The Bad Plus) try Stream out.

Hello, my name is Ben Pezzner and I am a musician/college student. I've been into TR's music for quite some time now, so I decided to start recording some interpretations of his music on the different instruments that I play.

Here's the first recording - it is Stream on the piano. Since I just learned it today it's still a bit rough around the edges. Every time I play through it it's completely different, so expect more versions to come (hence the name: Stream1).

I put it up on my music page: www.pezshow.com/music.html

Enjoy,
