i loved how tolkien didn't model his mythology after any one real world mythology, but intentionally or not blended them into something wholly unique.
i always take iluvatar to be like the judo-christian god, the vala to be like roman/greek gods with manwe=zeus/jupiter, and the maia to be the nine, or 7, i forget, choirs of angels. or, the different elemental associations aside, you could look at it all to be in the christian way, with iluvatar as god, and the vala as sort of the highest archangels, with melkor being the fallen archangel, satan, and manwe being michael, and all the maia as lesser angels, with the 1/3 of the angels lucifer took with him being sauron, the balrogs and assorted demons of melkor.
the fleeing of the elves' spirit from the body to mandos upon death, to be born again later hints at reincarnation. the dwarves have their valhalla situation, and man has the fate real humans are generally thought to share; some unknown end. the final battle irmo (mandos) spoke of in the northern prophecies, when manwe comes against melkor and all living and dead do battle on either side, is sort of like the second coming of christ, when he fights satan.
the funny thing is, outside of the mythology itself, tolkiens claims no allegory, and that he actually didn't much care for allegory at all. that is, nothing stands for anything else. any appearence of allegory is simply applicibilty. a lot of things i've heard people claim for symbolism, saruman=hitler for example, simply can't be because the character saruman was created before hitler's rise. there's only themes that ring so true as to forcibly suggest certain things in one's own time. 40 years down the line, people will be drawing new parallels to these same things. there's the theme of industry stamping out nature, the classic good vs. evil, the fear of death, and a whole shit ton more. as many as this world has, since his world was almost as complete as this one. |

You can see Tolkien's academics shining through in the Dwarves as they share certain similiarities with the Vikings and Norse mythology. It's great. |

yeah, what actually happened was hobbits were a group of humans who went west, i guess. a long long time before lotr. and they got smaller and lazier. what small religious anything the hobbits have come actually from elves.
the dwarves were created not by the god, iluvatar, but by the vala aule. iluvatar allowed them life and gave them the free will that aule couldn't. it's believed that dwarves, when dead, go to aman and in mandos have a hall seperate of elves and of men, and after the final battle will aid aule in repairing the arda. |

Hmm, curious hobbits...you know I suppose they could be an offshoot, but I'm inclined to believe they originated as a distinctive race. I don't recall there being any God they worship, or have some ancestor fascination like dwarves (according to JRR tolkien and other Fantasy writers). My bet is they are their own exclusive race, with no darwinian nonsense occuring. |

And Hobbits as a rule, or generally more environmentally friendly, except Ted Sandyman, the miller, who was very happy for the Industrialization of the Shire under Sharkey, or Saruman.
Tom Delay could be the Ted under Sharkey (Bush) I suppose. But still unlikely that he's from a Hobbit. Orc or the evil Harradrim (Sp?) are much more likely to produce a Delay type figure. |
