Someone told me this guy is pretty well-known but I've not heard his name much, so does anyone know who he is? Anyway I'm going to see him Thursday night along with the UMES Jazz Ensemble... |

yeah, that must've been right after Maynard switched to playing Monette horns, as opposed to just using their mouthpieces; I met Monette too, when I bought my mouthpiece back in the day, 400 bucks and I don't even play anymore! but HRW I tend to agree, but some things are just worth it! I mean, if you could buy Tim's own D-35 wouldn't you try to even if it was expensive, I know I sure as s*** would! besides, the quality is worth it, don't you think? or you'd prefer that had had about 400 different pairs of hands on it? instead of four pairs or even less? |

I've met Monette. He was right in front of me at the maynard show a month or so ago. Maynard even brought him up on stage and all to thank him for making trumpets. |

Alright, I just think spending an exorbitent amount of money on anything is horseshit. The only reason all these things are so expensive is because there are just enough people in the world with the money to continue to buy these things.
Tim very well could own some nutcase expensive guitar, but he plays on a D-35 most of the time, not that he doesn't have a pretty serious collection, from what I know, he doesn't have any relics sitting around. He should get his own Martin signature model, he'd a have a guitar built to his specs, and he'd help out whatever charity he wanted, it'd be a win/win situation. |

to answer previous questions, his trumpets and other various horns, are so priced, because they are hand-made, one at a time, to EXACTING specifications, and all of his (I think) are plated in 24 kt gold, and some are even one piece instruments, with the mouthpiece built in! I only know all this because I used to play trumpet growing up and was obsessed with the company who makes them www.monette.net seriously cool stuff!
p.s. the most expensive guitar I yearn to own is a somogyi modified dreadnought, which runs pretty well at 14k, and my list of dreams guitars is up to 17 now, which include a variety of differently voiced instruments from mandolins to citterns to baritones |

Well, y'all were right, of course... I didn't know a trumpet could DO some of those things. Wynton & Co. got there late, so they weren't in the first half at all, which sucked, but they made up for it in the second half by doing a couple of songs not listed on the program. Pretty amazing stuff. |

I agree, unless of course you're a guitar virtuoso(i love that word) like Tim is; then you can have the most expensive guitar you want. |

Any professional acoustic instruments are expensive, and the good ones only appreciate with time.
Case in point; I'm buying an "average" double bass this summer for around $10k. Comparably, a violin with the same "average" status goes for around $200k. It's just wood, but it's much more. Same with trumpets, sure, there are factories that pump out student trumpets for cheap, but the ones that have really good craftsmanship are going to cost you. |

I found out this morning that I'm going to see George Winston in Annapolis on the 23'rd as well, again, anyone heard of him? I'm really not into jazz musicians and stuff, but I love basically any live music and I enjoy listening to jazz sometimes. |

yes enjoy, he is awesome. I saw him at the Blue Note in NYC a few yrs back. He also hosted a PBS special series on Jazz a few yrs ago that was great. I wish they would re-air it. Its prolly available thru amazon, i just have never checked.
Branford is the man! I discovered him when I saw the Blue Turtles in Montreal during that tour. Instantly hooked. At the time I was a deadhead and touring with them all the time. After seeing him in montreal with the BT's i fantasized about him jamming with the Dead during second set drums and space. Well, doesn't he show up with the Dead a few yrs later during the second set one fine night in NYC. I know Pam can appreciate that collaboration as much as I did. He can improv and blend with anyone and make it work. Performed one of the best Eyes of the World and Darkstars I've ever seen (150+ Dead shows so I've seen Eyes performed many times). He's kinda like TR in that he is a most amazing musician with an incredible outlook on music, performing and life and at the same TIMe is extremely humble. He talks about it alot in the flick Bring on the Night. |

Muskrat, Wynton and his whole family are extremely well know in the Jazz world! I have seen the family perform together at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia and it was one of the most exciting performances I have ever heard! You will NOT be disappointed.
