Posted - 11/01/2004 : 08:24:48 AM We will keep Pedro, I'd put money on it and Schilling has 2 years left on his contract. If his surgery fails, he will be useless. I'd say we will probably only let 2 of the 17 free agents go, Meintkevich, and Kapler. Doesn't free up much money but I think it's very important to the owners to try to keep as much of the dream team in tact as they can. Pedro wants to stat now and I want him to. I thought we may try to can Manny to free up some money but not now that he is MVP.
The parade was excellent. The team rode in the famous duck boats and instead of a rally at city hall, they opted to have a "rolling rally" and then the procession then went right out into the Charles River for a mile. It was great. Very few arrests and even fewer injuries. Less than 100 total incidents. In a crowd of 3.5 Million+ I'd say Love was in the air. The best part for me was to see David Ortiz standing smack dab in the middle of his duck boat, larger than life, with this teeny tiny bright orange life vest around his neck. It looked like a scarf on him. I laughed so hard... like anyone would let him drown. Some idiots even jumped into the river as they went by. They say the river is cleaned up but man... it still looks like lightly creamed coffee. Pedro got hit in the head by a fan who threw a baseball. He was on the news last night (the thrower) and let me tell you, he feels like shit. Bill Buckner is pretty tiffed as well. Gotta feel bad for a guy who's family and children were threatened to the point that he had to pack his shit and move away just because of an error in a GAME. He was on the news as well, pretty bent about being "forgiven". He said... "for what?"... "what did I do that I need a giant group of strangers to forgive me for?" Gotta feel bad for that guy. Not to mention Nomar. |

Posted - 10/28/2004 : 2:00:26 PM That's too bad all that happened, it's such a shame,I mean this is supposed to be such a happy time and people get all violent. On the walk down to Fenway people started chanting "F... Bush" it made me nervous then someone yelled at the chanters to stop that this wasn't political it was about the red socks. They finally stopped yelling. I don't think I realized how serious things were until I got home and saw the news. Oh yeah, there were metal cages around all the T (subway) stations, that was really weird. Oh well, people go crazy. Its about 45 degrees here but everyone is so nice and plesant today, they are walking with an extra skip to their steps. I hope it lasts! |

Posted - 10/28/2004 : 1:42:47 PM my friend was there. he was teargassed, punched, and hit with a riot stick. apparently someone smashed up a miata, opened the gas tank, stuffed a rag in there, and lit it on fire. then, some dude went into the car and started stealing shit. apparently there was a shitload of riot police. |

Posted - 10/28/2004 : 10:23:24 AM I had a professor that would totally have taken that excuse. He was a season ticket holder in the bleachers and was known for yelling "Yaaaaaaaaz!" (in the 80's it was "Waaaaaaaade!") at the top of his lungs. His picture was on the cover of the Globe Sports section on Opening Day once time. That was cool.
After he secured tenure, he sponsored a research effort to explain why home run production was reduced in Fenway Park following the construction of box seats above home plate.

Posted - 10/28/2004 : 08:56:26 AM I went down to Fenway after the game last night, I didn't know if it was the smartest thing in the world to do but hey, it was part of history I had to go. Things were pretty intense but I didn't start to freak out until a saw the army (literally) of cops in riot gear to a line formation and start running after people sticks in hand. That's when my roommates and I left. I'm really glad I went down, and it was amazing to see the fans, seeing them react...I can't compare to anything other than maybe the second coming. What a great time to be living in Beantown (not such a great time to be going to take a midterm...does I watched the game and went to fenway count as an excuse to not have studied in boston?-what's scary is it might!) |

Posted - 10/27/2004 : 10:26:54 AM Why, oh why didn't I bet the Red Sox to beat the Yankees after game 3? Just found out they were giving 150-1 odds in Vegas. If you assume every game is a cointoss, the odds are 1/16 that they'll come back. Had I known, I definitely would have dropped $20 on it. Apparently some guy from around here bet $2000 on it. Bet he's pretty happy. I wonder what the odds at that point were against the Red Sox winning the World Series. Probably astronomically high. ::sigh:: |

i really wanted the Sox to win at Fenway but i think it'd be awesome if we swept St. Louis and won at Fenway another year.
as long as my Red Sox win, i'm good |

Posted - 10/26/2004 : 10:53:50 PM yeah but your frustration is easier to take. the mets always lose because they're too fucking stupid to recognize talent when they see. you ever notice how EVERY player the mets trade goes to some other team and kicks ass? your curse, if indeed there is one, is frustrating because there's nothing you can do about it. the mets curse is maddening because there is something that can be done, but no one is doing it. |

Have NO idea how I missed this thread, as I've been a Boston fan for as long as I can remember. RIDICULOUSLY happy with the way things have gone in the past 6 games.
Anyway, try being a Mets fan? If I recall correctly, the Mets won the World Series in 1986 (against none other than Boston) and have won it in 1969 and 1973 as well. The last time the Red Sox won was 1918. The Mets are in the National League and rarely have opponents as formidable (although incredibly hated) as the Yankees. I'll take an 18 year gap over an 86 year gap anyday (in more ways than one). |

If the Astros win today, it will be Texas vs. Massachusetts hmmmm.... conspiracy theory anyone?
I think that's how I will choose who to vote for! No, jk... but crazy yes. I loved these last game series.. I come from a long line of Yankees, but my 2 roommates and our close circle of friends are from Boston... if the Yanks won, my family would be estatic... and the Sox win and my homelife gets a lot better!!
However... Sox going to the series is a fantastic and welcomed change! |

Posted - 10/21/2004 : 11:41:31 AM Hockey > Baseball
This hockey strike is killing me. My new house is so sweet for hockey games. During the world cup we had some great gatherings, but now this house is going to waste.
This is the first time I've watch baseball since 93(Blue Jays woo!) and i used to love the game back then. I never got back into it after the strike.
After watching this series of games pretty seriously I remembered that i never had the patience for 9 innings let alone OVERTIME.
Baseball lacks the constant intensity I need in a sport. Hockey overtime is literally edge of your seat action all the way through.
I also recommend lacrosse, that's a pretty intense sport too.
Don't take my opinion too seriously though, because I'm not the biggest sports fan so I'm probably not making the best arguments here, I'm just saying... |

Posted - 10/20/2004 : 3:45:53 PM i called game 7 after the yankee's won game 3. mlb is scripted. the yankees would have won in 4 but there's more money to be made in 7. not the players, i mean.
the yankee's are a fucking mercenary squad anyway. they have two farm club players on the team still, i think. |

Posted - 10/20/2004 : 02:55:34 AM Not that I favor either side, but the Red Sox have become almost as evil as the Yankees in their pursuit for the championship. If they had gotten A-Rod instead of the Yanks, their payrolls would have nearly been equal.
I'm also somewhat bittered by a team that has an excuse for losing, such as Boston's supposed curse.
But, it has been a damn good series. Only twice in professional sports (both previous times in hockey by some of the greatest teams of all-time) has a team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win a seven game series. The Sox have a chance to be the third. |
