So I had a pretty good gig last night. I had emailed this woman that does the booking for this coffee shop near my house on Sunday night, about possibly playing there in the not too distant future. She emailed me back saying that they were booked up until March 2005, but they would love to hear me on tape or CD so that we could discuss a future gig.

So I thought "Okay. I have plenty of time to get something decent together to send to her." Well, then I get a call at work Monday afternoon, saying a guy had canceled for that Friday, and would I like to fill in? I accepted, and then had 4 days to plan a 3 hour set.

So anyway, here's the set I played:

SET I

Gravedigger^
L’s Song(David Gray Cover)
Home To You*
Rhyme & Reason^
A New Day*
Say Hello, Wave Goodbye(David Gray Cover)
Green Eyes(Coldplay Cover)
When The World Ends^
Here We Are*
Grace Is Gone^

SET II

Nothing Else Matters(Metallica Cover)
I Will Always*
Big Eyed Fish^(867-5309 outro)
Angel From Montgomery(John Prine Cover)
Blue Water Baboon Farm^-->Break Away*
The Maker(Daniel Lanois Cover)
Hello In There(John Prine Cover)
What Would You Say^
Let Fate Decide*

SET III

Seek Up^
The Way*
The Stone^
Reasons*
Christmas Song^
Times Like These(Foo Fighter's Cover)
Back Then*
Tripping Billies^
Dead Flowers(Rolling Stones Cover)

^ Dave Matthews cover
* Original Song

Needless to say, there were a lot of covers played. But as I've said in other posts, crowds around here don't take well to stuff they have never heard. My covers are pretty obscure though, I mean, casual Dave Matthews fans don't know the Blue Baboon Farm, and probably just thought that was part of my song, Break Away.

Good gig though, and a lot of people from work came down to check it out. I was happy with the set, especially since I had 4 days to plan it and practice it. I pulled a few covers I haven't done in a while out of my ass there. But I'm sore today from lugging my PA equipment back and forth.

Likewise...always seen it as a Jagger/Richards tune. I'll have to look into that.

Really?! I had no idea. The version I actually cover is Townes Van Zandt's, which I first heard in the Big Lebowski, and can also be heard on his album Roadsongs.

I just thought that the Stones had written it, every time I see the song listen somewhere it says (Jagger/Richards) and tabs that I've seen for it mention the original Stones version. I'm not a huge Stones fan, so I wouldn't know.

Nice stuff man! Except, Dead Flowers is a Rolling Stones COVER...it was written by Townes Van Zandt...one of my favorite all time songs...Send me dead flowers....

But definately look up Townes...he's dead now but he was a great songwriter...

I don't think anyone took any pics unfortunately. I didn't even think to have anyone bring a camera.

Yeah, I'm hoping that I can get another gig there easily now. Like I said, a lot of people from work came down, and I'm sure the guy running the place noticed the crowd.

One thing that was cool. The place is kind of in two different sections. There's one that's more like a restaurant with tables and booths, then another section with a fireplace with couches and stuff, more like a coffee house type atmosphere. I was facing more toward the fire place area, and most people who came in, after they got their drinks or food or whatever would walk over to the fireplace area, see that there wasn't really any room to sit, and then they'd walk over to the other side of the place. So at least they had wanted to sit in the direct line of fire of my guitar and vocals . I made a few tips too, even though I didn't have a tip jar.

That's awesome man, a 3 hour set is impressive... are there any pictures or anything? Maybe they will call you back more often now.
