Oversleeping SUCKS. I seriously need to see a sleep therapist or something. No matter how long my sleep time is, I'm always exhausted. This morning I woke up at 8:15, have to be at work by 8:30 and it takes me 20 minutes to get here. Somehow I was only 5 minutes late, even I don't wanna know how.

I never have any trouble falling asleep, and I've tried altering my hours of sleep to 6 hours, 8 hours, 10 hours, 12+ hours and I'm still ALWAYS tired. I've had bloodwork done and everything else I can think of, and apparently I'm physically normal. Oh well, off to yawn the day away.

Speak of the devil...overslept this morning, just got to work, supposed to be here at 8:30. Don't even know if the alarm went off or not, I'm in a complete haze. Problem is, I need to ask for Friday off and I've only been working here for a month. Oyyy!! Silky, I've had the exact same thoughts lately. The smoking will be a bitch, but as for the rest of it, I think I can take it step by step. I'm seeing a bunch of concerts in the next several days, most during daytime/early evening...so hopefully I'll see some sunlight to start.

I'm trying to think of a decent type of exercise I can get at this point. Running ain't gonna happen. I used to run in a mile in just over 5 minutes...then I started smoking. Curse that day! Oh well, maybe I'll start with some walking and get back into weights. Thanks for the advice, all.

Why thankya Pam. :)

was having trouble sleeping lately as well, when i realized, since its summer and i'm not in school, i don't go outside as often, so i went out for a bit yesterday, and i slept soooo good last night, Silky was right about the whole sun thing! Silky is wicked awesome, i highly recommend taking his advice

Thank you for the kind words... glad you got some sleep. You sure you didn't just wear yourself out though? :)

Unfortunately, the sun doesn't work for me, I spend most of my days outside with my guitar. I've tried medication/pills/matressess... I think I'm going to get this checked out by a doctor...

Doctor sounds like the right move for you... unless you happen to have left out some kinda detail of your lifestyle that might include something like drinking 2 pots of coffee before bed. If you do see a doctor, though, consider asking about Ambien. It's supposed to be a bit milder than some other sleep in a jar cures (i.e.- you can wake up in the morning instead of being in a coma).

quote:
Try writing out your thoughts before you try to go to sleep. When I have too much on my mind I can't sleep until I give my thoughts an outlet.

Also supposed to be good, though I've not seen any research done on this. More stuff to the effect of delving into training your subconscious etc... interesting stuff though.

My diet is atrocious. I average probably just over 1 meal per day. I NEVER eat breakfast. Lunch is optional as far as I'm concerned, and dinner is usually very light if it happens at all. I find myself never feeling hungry. It's really not healthy (obviously)...I've lost probably 40 pounds in the past year. Food just doesn't interest me. I'm sure that plays a large role.

My father has sleep apnea, oddly enough I was just discussing that with my mother this weekend. He holds his breath for upwards of 2-3 minutes at a time. Between my parents, various girlfriends etc...no one has ever told me that I do this or that I snore. I'll definitely keep my ear to the ground regarding this, though.

The sunlight argument makes a ridiculous amount of sense. I currently am stuck in our basement while we do renovations. It looks the same whether it's 2 in the morning or noon...always completely dark. I rarely get any exercise and I'm hardly ever outdoors for more than a car ride. I spend way too much TIMe in casinos or at computers (2 computer jobs and miscellaneous TIMe).

I hate vegetables, lol. However, in this new light, I think I'm going to make a concerted effort to adjust my diet and get myself back into shape. I'm thinking that quitting smoking might assist in that, although that's a bigger problem lol. Oh well, I'm off to find some inspiration here. I'm so unhealthy it's disgusting...perhaps that'll help motivate me.

Dude... damn. Individually, ANY of those can make you feel lethargic, let alone all together! No wonder you're feeling tired! Man, if I were you, I would take each of those on one by one. I wouldn't be thinking short-term either, I'd be thinking lifestyle changes. If you were to eat a reasonable diet, see daylight, get a little bit of regular exercise, and quit smoking, you would feel like a new man... literally. I cannot tell you what a difference it makes, but unfortunately I know from experience. I was exactly the same way about 3 years ago minus the smoking. No more though, and I would never go back to the way I was... ever.

I used to smoke non-filterd cigs, I really loved smoking, and then I started working out and lost my desire... i didn't even try to quit, i just got icked out after a while. It did take like 4 months of getting in shape for that to happen though.
If you have any health related questions feel free to ask me. I'm one of those health nuts.

So, Macht, I guess my advice about the effects of sex don't apply to you? Sorry.

All kidding aside:

Maybe you guys could help me out...

I try sleeping and I just can't sleep.

Like I will head to bed when I can't handle being up and mybe takes me 2 hours to fall asleep and I end up waking up at least 2-3 times, and takes me about another hour to fall asleep for each of those.

Now this night is probably the worst, I went to bed at 11, and I don't think I got a bit of sleep, its like 4:15 now, but I think that's due to becuase my bed is taken up right now.

Me and James are on the opposite ends of the street, so I can kinda relate to him

Silky The Pimp Posted - 06/26/2004 : 01:21:17 AM
James, I did a good amount of work related to sleep in my time as a phych. major, so I have a few suggestions. Based on your description, I'm going to assume that it sounds like you have no trouble sleeping, but that you just feel tired during the day.

First thing to try is very simple. Get some sun. Our internal sense of time (circadian rhythm) is very much dependent on sunlight. If you are spending all of your time busy and indoors, it's very possible that you've thrown yourself out of whack. Taking some time to simply get some sun on a regular basis could very well help your internal clock to reset and know when it's time for sleep, but just as importantly in your case, when it's time to be awake. Chronic fatigue is a big problem in areas to the extreme north, where there are far fewer hours of sunlight each day during certain seasons. Lack of sunlight can also lead to depression... that's why suicide rates in northern Alaska are among the highest in the world. This leads me to my next question... are you, or have you suffered from depression since the start of this problem? Lethargy is one of several key signs of depression. If this has posed a problem for you even remotely recently, again, get some sun. Aside from helping your body know the time for sleep and awake time, sunlight is a very effective treatment for depression. Also consider sleeping with your blinds open so that the sun can wake you up in the morning.

It's been driven into the ground, but also do not underestimate the importance of diet. For example, if you aren't eating enough, that could cause you to be tired. Plain and simple... not enough fuel... not enough energy. The science of how food can make you tired is very well documented. If you think there's even a chance that your diet could be part of the problem, think about consulting with a nutritionist to discuss what might help you feel better.

If all else fails... "No-Doze" and coffee it.

I heard from this guy that Iron helps? But he wasn't a doctor, just a scientist.
rdj218 Posted - 06/25/2004 : 6:06:21 PM
What's your diet like?
Make sure your eating an array of veggies(the more colors the better), whole grains(thiamin helps with energy)and fruit-- otherwise your system might not be getting what it needs to function right. The B vitamins, Spicy food and garlic also help to give an energy boost. Also, eating processed food is like making your body work for no pay-off(nutrients)so try to avoid as much as possible.

I have to eat just right and run in order to maintain good energy levels--I noticed that if i don't run i'm way more tired.

hope this helps

One night he stopped breathing, I layed there waiting for him to start breathing again, ready to shake him if he needed it, but to my horror I fell asleeep. I awoke in a panic, thinking OMG what if he died? What kind of wife was I? He didn't of course and he did go for a sleep study which proved what I said, he has sleep apnea. That can be serious and it will rob you of a good nights sleep as your body keeps working hard to keep you breathing. It affects people of all ages.

Anyway it is no joking matter. A sleep study may be just what you need...........or sex, Ok maybe it could be a joking matter, hehe. Sex always makes me sleep better

If you stop breathing in yoru sleep, you suffer fromt he sleeping disorder SLEEP APNEA

And the sex thing is true too, I find. My girlfriend and I have realized that I don't snore after gettin busy.

How's your bed? Buying a new, comfortable bed might do the trick. Also, try washing your sheets every week or two, maybe even buy a new soft blanket, wash your pillows. It seems like the key for you is comfort. Do whatever you can to make your sleep as comfortable as possible. Also, have you ever tried sleeping with earpugs? It really eliminates little noises that might not wak you up, but that might knock you out of that deep stage sleep. These are all things that help me sleep better.
CPPJames Posted - 06/25/2004 : 3:02:16 PM
I work 9 hour days and then I come home and do some contract work almost every night, usually 3-4 hours. Aside from that, I'm constantly busy. I don't ever have any time to just do nothing. Every once in a great while, the poor sleep or whatever it is, catches up with me and I come home from work at 5:30 and sleep until I have to get up for work at 7:30am. A lot of people thought I might have diabetes, but I've had bloodwork done like 5 times in the past 3-4 years, which came back clean. Like I said, I never have any problem at all falling asleep...but it's like the sleep I get is "bad" sleep. I can't remember the last time I woke up and actually felt refreshed/didn't mind getting out of bed. Even if I have something that I'm highly looking forward to that day, I still feeel absolutely no motivation. I'll look into that Ambien thing. If that helps, I'll be forever in your debt.
Jay Posted - 06/25/2004 : 2:38:45 PM
Somebody with the same problem as me!!!!! Luckily, I'm never late for work because my brother is my employer, and he wakes me up when he needs me to help...But I've been told that it's the amount you exersize during the day, how much you get done...But I think that's bullshit cause I work my ass off when I do work, and when I sleep afterwards I still wake up tired. My other brother, Chris, had the same problem...his friends told him the same thing, just exersize more and you'll sleep better...it didn't work for him, so he took Ambien for a few weeks and said it helped like you wouldn't beleive. Interesting...Maybe you should try it?
dan p. Posted - 06/25/2004 : 1:02:47 PM
yeah. i'd get tired of it after a while, too.
CPPJames Posted - 06/25/2004 : 10:48:28 AM
I appreciate it. I almost got fired from my last job because I overslept 4-5 times in a year. It's never by more than an hour, because some internal alarm clock goes off or something...but it still sucks. I HATE being late...which I guess defines irony.
