I'm thinking about two different PAs from Musicians Friend:
Yamaha EMX88S-S115V PA Package--1,389.99
Yamaha EMX88M/S115IV Package--$1,299.99
The only real difference between these two is the speakers. One comes with the Yamaha S115V speakers, and the other comes with the S115IV speakers. I can't determine a difference between these speakers, but the PA's differ in price by about 90 bucks.
Does anyone know about this stuff and can shed some light on what the difference between the two speakers is?

Fleabass my son wants a pa system. I probably won't get him one til next Christmas as he has more important needs at the moment but I am going to have to remember to ask you before I buy anything.
Sure is good to know that as far as music goes, this board and its members offer a plethora of information. |

I just do stuff alone now, acoustic guitar w/vocals, with some rhythm stuff provided by my Groove Box. Yes, the system would appear to be overkill for just that. But a more powerful system will lend itself better to different settings, as was already mentioned. Also, I have every intention of, eventually, getting a band together, so the bigger system will need less expansion when that happens.

The other thing to remember is that loudspeakers aren't like guitar amps in the respect that you have to use every watt available to get a good sound. If you buy a Marshall stack, you need to crank it to get a good sound. With a loudspeaker system however, you don't have to crush the amp.
I'm not neccesarily talking about the power as much as the number of speakers/monitors. Usually 2 speakers, 2/3 mons, and a sub does the job. Even for outdoor gigs. Then again, if it's a loud band you might all that cone-age. |

I don't think it'd be overkill. After all, I'd rather have a system that could always be louder, instead of one that isn't loud enough.
When I play out for solo instrumental stuff, I use a Mackie 808s which can pump out 1200 watts along with 2 15-inch yamaha cabs. The way I see it, a system like that could match most situations in a club/bar.

Damn dude, that's a serious PA setup right there!
What are you using it for exactly? If you don't mind my asking. In my experience this would be borderline overkill, but then again, I don't know what you want to do with it. |

Yeah, I noticed that too about it saying EMX88M instead of EMX88S. But when you click on the item and read the description, it says the package includes a Yamaha EMX88S mixer, so I can only assume that the EMX88M is a typo.
As far as the difference in the speakers, their specs, including power rating 500W Program/1000W Peak, are nearly identical. I'm thinking I'll save the 90 bucks and go with the EMX88S/S115IV package.

well, here's the thing, if you check yamaha's website, you find that they don't make a powered mixer called an EMX88M, even though that's what is listed on musicians friend. Regardless, I'd go with the EMX88S, or anything else ending with an "S" as that indicates a stereo mixer. I definitely recommend choosing a stereo mixer over a mono, as a stereo leaves more options down the road.
As far as the speakers go, I'd don't see much of a difference except the V series seems to be a louder speaker. |

My buddy owns a Yamaha EMX88M/S115IV and I play my 314ce and run my backup vocals through it. He puts his ovation and his lead vocals. I think you would be happy with this one. I sure as hell think it sounds nice |
