I have one hell of a toothache...And to tell you the truth, I've been letting the damn thing fester in my mouth for a long time...Just to lazy to get it fixed...It's happening tomorrow, that is, I'm getting it "Fixed." I've never had a root canal (which, I'm assuming, will be the method used to makes my tooth stop throbbing.) and I figured someone here has probably had one done. Does it hurt? I hope not. When they filled this tooth, I guess that they didn't drill it out clean enough, cause it fell out leaving a large, black hole in one molar. Ouch. Ahhhh!!!!!! I need Orajel. And six Tylenol should do the trick.

Awwww Jay! Sending luck and good vibes your way! It has to feel better after they work on it! Mental note: Don't put off going to the dentist!

Well, It's a full=blown big ass absces (sp) The dentist said it was so bad even HE couldn't treat it, so I'm going to a specialist tomorrow for a root canal...Wish me luck!!!!

Well, this thing has been festering for a while

Root canals can hurt, but that when they've only been untreated for a very long time. All the horror stories people talk about when they go to the dentist usually happen because they hadn't gone to the dentist in like 10 years. Although it's a little late, I think they best way to deal with a dentist is to find one that you like. For example, my mom is a dentist...so I don't have much trouble. Even though I have the worst gag reflex she's ever seen.

I've had two root canals and I agree with Pam. The drugs make it pretty painless. If your dentist gives you a topical anesthetic before the shot, the shot's not even that bad. Especially if you just keep your eyes closed.

That said, you can still hear all that's going on during the root canal (if that makes sense) and that can be rather unnerving.

Jay I have also had root canals and they take time but don't hurt. The only pain is the novicane (sp?) they use to numb but that isn't bad either.

So sorry for you though, tooth pain is no fun at all!

worst about toothaches is when your smoking it up and that dries out and hits the nerve. ooooowwwwww

In these situations I find it best to beat one's self upon the head with a hammer until blackout.

Seriously, that sucks.

As a temporary solution until you go to the dentist, you can place an ice cube in the "web" of skin in between your thumb and index finger.

WOW! mouth/tooth pain sucks! A few weeks ago I had to have oral surgery and 2 root canals at once. When I had my wisdom teeth removed 6 years ago they left a piece in my jaw, by accident Oh of course. well instead of going up and out (like most TIMes) it went down and in.
Bottom line LOTS of problems and LOTS of pain. I can't tell you how many percocets, larcets, and other pain meds I had waiting to get it fixed (which wasn't too long cause my dentist is the best ever).
Root canals DO NOT hurt!! I had about 75 thousand horror stories told to me before I went in because I had never had one. They give you so much anesthesia you can't feel a thing. Weird sensations and noise but no pain.

So Jay, don't let anyone tell you its bad like they did to me because it's not. You'll feel a hundred TIMes better when you get finished because the pain goes away.

2 words of advice, don't take too many tylenol at once or over days because its very hard on your organs. alternate it with advil(ibuprophen).
And, get it fixed sooner than later because an opening in your mouth is a direct opening into your circulatory system and therefore a direct opening to your heart. alotta heart and heart valve damage is done because of tooth problems.

and I'm telling you this because our resident nurse Liz hasn't been around too much HeeHee!

I've never had a root canal. Just wanted to say that really sucks. But at least they'll give you some hard hitting pain killers. At least, they should.
