wow, i never saw this thread. thanks for the boost arthen.

Its flattering i was approached for info on music, but im not your guy for Dream Theater. Having fallen asleep seeing them live and thinking their music is at best decent rock and at worst pompous prog crap, Im not able to really put in a good word for them. The musicianship is amazing, no doubt, but i never liked the Yes/Rush/Dream Theater "epic" prog rock stuff (Pink Floyd was the only band that could do it well).

Hopefuly others answered you a bit better, and im sure Fluffy (once hes back from touring) can help out as well.

I just wanted to comment how funny I found it that Erich was kind of addressed in the title and he never once commented.

Exactly! and if you can get the dvd, it's worth it. it is mostly concert footage, but it also has footage from this dream/murder mystery that the songs coincide with. it's great! I couldn't really compare dreamtheather and Tim's electric work, just not the same really...

This friend of mine is semi-into Tim Reynolds, not so much his acoustic stuff, but his electric stuff. I think all he's really heard is a few live cuts from a couple Puke Matrix shows in 99. When he's telling people about Tim Reynolds, he compares them to Dream Theater.... Is this an accurate comparison? Or does Dream Theater sound nothign like TR3/Puke Matrix?

I've never really heard Dream Theater so I can't say. But I wouldn't doubt for a moment that this particular friend has no clue what he's talking about.

let's see...i guess maybe i could compare the vocals to more of a queen/rush kinda style, but a helluva lot better, the singer's got a great voice. the backing back is metal, with some softer tinges here and there. some odd time stuff, but it's like all of the band are virtuosos, totally amazing in my opinion.

i can't compare them to many bands, cause they're pretty unique, Vai/Satchish guitar, flying fingers synth/keys, fast double bass drumming, really amazing lick oriented bass playing...

i'm not erich, but i'm a pretty big fan of dreamtheater.
The band is a progressive rock band filled with virtuoso musicians. you got one of the best hard rock drummers mike portnoy who is amazing, john petrucci who is def. a top shredder, just toured with G3 with Vai and Satch. I've heard the comment before that they're music is boring or stale, but personally i think they're cd scenes from a memory is on of the best flowing albums i have heard(alongside dark side of the moon and phish's rift..)

If you get a chance to see em live(i haven't :( ) check em out, they're great!
