Posted - 03/14/2003 : 4:51:54 PM Today I was reading a book about snakes that we will be working on in class next week and there are some facts about snakes I can hardly believe!
It said in India there are between 10,000-20,000 deaths from snake bites every year! There are only about 12 in the USA/year
Even though there are only about 50 poisonous types of snakes they are more deadly that lions, tigers, wolves, bears and sharks. They kill more people (apparently mostly in India) in a year than all these other animals have combined in 100 years! They kill more people in one day that killer whales have in all of history!
Ok, I just was amazed by all of this. Now I know why I hate snakes! |

I'm not sure about the actual numbers of deaths (seems high to me but who knows) but Southeast Asia (India included) has the highest number of poisonous snake deaths. The Discovery Channel recently aired a show about venomous animals and featured a viper from SE Asia (Russell's Viper).
