If anyone finds a copy to buy online, let me know.

Posted - 01/03/2003 : 4:02:00 PM Here's what I found on http://www.geek.com:
"Early Sony PlayStation2 consoles sold in Japan had an easy hack to allow the playback of DVD movies from all regions. Thus, movie makers could not control as strictly where and when DVD movies are released. Sony caught plenty of flack about this from the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and is working to remedy the issue by removing the hack. The limited amount of consoles available at launch (500K vs. 1 million expected) may be due to this situation, while Sony feverishly updates core logic or produces entirely new chips that do not support the hack."
And then I found this on http://australianit.news.com.au:
"The second issue is around overseas titles being played on PS2. Isn't the same issue existing for DVDs? They are regionally coded and you only can play them if you have the correct region chip in your player. I have a DVD player on my PC and the region number is software enabled - I can change it five times and then it will stay like that."
So my idea is this: If your PS2 doesn't play anything but Region 1 and want to buy a small number of import movies, buy an extra DVD drive for each region you need. |

Posted - 01/03/2003 : 2:09:32 PM According to their website, they only have Region 4 DVDs, and all three of my DVD players will handle only Region 1. At some point I may try to buy an all-region player just for times like this...
Oh well. Thanks for trying. |

Posted - 12/27/2002 : 5:51:54 PM Here's a synopsis from an IMDB user review:
Set in New Zealand, the story focuses on a poor family living by the highway. The oldest son is about to join a gang, the younger son is running with a bad crowd and finds himself sent to a boys' home. The oldest daughter is a smart, bookish girl who writes in her journal and keeps the younger siblings occupied while their drunk father beats the heck out of their mom.
Mom comes from a royal Maori family while Dad's ancestors were slaves. He can't forget this and won't let her forget that she's no longer amongst royalty -- that she left them for him and his kind. She hates the life they live and the example she's setting for her kids, but she can't help loving her husband. And he loves her.
Just as you hate watching Jake beat his wife, you are also shown his loving, sweet side. And you end up hoping his sweet side will come back.
It's a depressing but powerful movie.
