Posted - 12/18/2002 : 06:27:59 AM Just saw on Good Morning America yesterday about gas station fires from static. Maybe I am the last one to know these things but I didn't think of static causing a fire at the pumps.
Be careful if you go back into your car after you put the nozzle in the tank. You can unknowingly pick up a static charge, then if you touch the handle to the nozzle it can start a fire. If it does....DON'T PULL THE NOZZLE BACK OUT OF THE TANK!!!!That is when things will go from bad to worse! They showed survalence tape of someone being burned to death and it wasn't pretty!!!! Really freaked me out!
They said by simply touching the top of your car before you reach for the nozzel to put into you car you will discharge any static before you go to fill up. Hope this makes sense...I am not too swift in the morning. |

Ahhh, that is a sight I'll never forget! Seriously though, I saw those news stories too... and only one thing came to mind. For those of you who have seen Bowling for Columbine, remember that part about the news in the US doing nothing except constantly filling us with fear? That really struck me powerfully when I saw the news stories just after I saw BFC. I mean, I guess its good to know that you could catch fire pumping gas, but I don't think it needs to be a top news story. I have just as much of a chance as having the roof collapse on me, but there arent news stories telling me to be careful while I sleep. |

Posted - 12/20/2002 : 07:56:14 AM I have had the gas spew on me as well. It sucks, luckily I did not blow up, but I set my hair on fire once, THAT SUCKED!!
As for states that pump your gas, I think in our travels, NJ is the only state that still does it. At least the only state where they are REQUIRED to do it and you are not allowed to. I have seen places in CO for instance where they will pump the gas for you if you want them to, but I think it costs more and they don't even do the windows. |

Posted - 12/20/2002 : 07:01:02 AM hey Spacemonkey....you in Jersey???? We're neighbors..hehehe
Nah...I'd rather pump my own gas....I bet jesey is the only state to still only have attendents pump gas....I don't have the patience to watch someone do something I can do myself
As for the GMA clip...they also showed a woman who was burned to death...no laughing matter.

Posted - 12/19/2002 : 10:19:12 PM Don't all pumps automatically stop when they're full? I was milling around waiting for my tank to fill up over thanksgiving and then I look and gas is spewing out of my car!!! That was odd. Fortunately I did not blow up. |

Posted - 12/19/2002 : 11:21:29 AM Isn't it illegal to pump your own gas in that state? Does the state follow the law? That's funny... I can't even think of a station that pumps gas for customers here in MS... |

Posted - 12/18/2002 : 10:45:16 AM If anyone is losing sleep over this I highly suggest moving to New Jersey, where gas station attendents pump your gas for you and would no doubt take the static charge and burn to a premature death in your place! |
