Hey everyone. This is my first post here although I've been reading the posts on this site for a while and everybody seems really cool. So I just wanted to join the chorus in praise of Tim and his playing and ask does Los Alamos is Burning almost make anyone else cry?

I mentioned this thread to Tim at dinner tonite and he gave me a little more to pass on about Los Alamos... He says he wrote right as it all started. B4 it had all really sunk in. He says if he had written it later it probably would have been even more morose because at the time he wrote it all the implications and possibilities had not sunk in. He says his mood worsened as the fires burned and the evacuations started. As a little side note, those fires were almost responsible for a cancelled show in Burlington VT that year. Tim was home on a break and was supposed to fly to Burlington to meet Rew and I. He called to say he could not leave his family and that we might have to cancel that show. Growing up in the midwest he had been thru lots of natural disasters(floods, tornados, etc) and he said he could not imagine having to go thru that w/out HIS dad, so there was no way he was leaving his family until he knew what was gonna happen. Happy to say it was OK and Tim ended up flying into Burlington 1 hr before he went onstage that nite and performed for the first time the beautiful moving Los Alamos is Burning. He had just left his family behind there a few hours earlier and I am sure he played that song with more feeling that nite than it had ever been performed. That reminds me, I need to get a copy of that show from the soundman there. If I do I will pass it along so everyone can hear the first performance of that song that seems to have touched so many people.

A lot of Tims stuff is pretty emotional to me. I may be a wuss, but I'm moved by songs like There is no Judgment and Los Alamos, and a lot of his improvisational delay ridden songs, like the tracks at the end of both discs on sanctuary. Some of the stuff he does just amazes me, and moves me....I can't reiterate enough how amazing the man is. He moves me more than a lot of songwriters that sing...but he does it without singing one word/note.

You don't have to feel bad about the jokes, they were already made back in the dressing room by Tim and Rew that night, Every song title became a Fluffy on fire joke. I was hoping it would translate to an actual setlist but out next show was not for a couple of days after and it had already worn off by then. We also decided Tim needed more pyrotechnics on stage like the electric tour so Tim asked if I do it again could I make sure I was running across the stage at that moment. I doubt it will happen, but ya never know.

Wow, I had no idea that the song was inspired by actual events. No wonder it seems, at least to me, to be one or his more emotional tunes.

Tim would be so happy that you get the feeling of the song. It is a very solemn song. It was written as he pondered the fires burning in the distance for his house in Santa Fe. He was quite concerned for the implications of the future healthwise and all for his family and himself. It was a ruff time for him. They just didn't know what was gonna happen. Fires burning out of control near your house can me quite frightening. His daughter Eura had to be sent home from school because they were so concerned about toxic fumes. Luckily everyone was OK. Tim moved there because he thought it was so beautiful and it is hard to watch something you hold as sacred, BURNING! It was a deep heartfelt song for him. Just wanted to shed a little light on it since you seem to hold it so dear.

Los Alamos is definately a beautiful song. I'm prone to not crying tho, so I can't wholly agree. But yeah, it does move me to emotions that I tend not to have.

It does make me want to cry because dammit I want to be that good on a guitar. So yeah, I concur.

Peace
