Posted - 12/26/2002 : 10:19:06 PM i just saw that someone was 99.9 percent sure that SCI did gin and juice. it is the gourds, i've seen it on a few of their live bootleg cds, its very good, and very not phish. I just got the bonnaroo video today, and it has this badass version of thela hun gidjeet with les claypool's flying frog brigade. Damn is it good! the marimba/xylophone player is like a freakin' lionel hampton! |

Posted - 05/03/2002 : 08:04:12 AM I'm 99.99999% sure (good enough for NASA technology) that it is indeed the String Cheese Incident that plays the cover version of Gin and Juice that is so popular on mp3, it wouldn't surprise me if they did their own at one time as I have a version of "Gettin Jiggy Wit It" that they do live on my computer.
As for Phish, I think they are one of the most lyrically creative and cool Jam bands ever put together, and Trey is an absolute monster on the guitar, and every time he solo's with his group or DMB, he tears the Jazz scales apart and comes up with some very cool electric sounds himself. Also of note, he plays a custom made 24 fret guitar... Peace Be With -WBB

Posted - 04/19/2002 : 9:10:25 PM oyesterhead is soo good, i saw a HBO special with them, but never live in person. Les claypool, trey anastasio, and stewart copeland, everyone of them so good in their own musicianship ways. I love that sideproject of a band!

Posted - 04/16/2002 : 07:11:18 AM Man, the set that you saw looks pretty damn good to me, but i can't see them pulling off zappa covers all that well(it's just extremely hard to!!) another good phish type site is www.nugs.net over 50 downloadable phish concerts, and a bunch of other bands as well(medeski martin and wood, oysterhead, grateful dead, widespread panic, string cheese incident...)

Posted - 04/16/2002 : 06:18:35 AM It was so long ago, I don't even remember, but I am pretty sure they did 3 Zappa songs, maybe 2. The setlist from the show I remember best only has one listed but they played parts all thru the other songs or something. I must admit, I was working the show so I probably wasn't paying the best attention. Although when I heard Zappa songs I stopped and watched. Here is the set list.
Tuesday, December 28, 1993 Bender Arena, American University, Washington, DC
Check: Dream On, My Mind's Got a Mind of its Own, Leprechaun, Daniel (several times), My Friend My Friend Intro, Punch You in the Eye (three times), The Squirming Coil (three times), Stash, My Friend My Friend, Horn (twice), Also Sprach Zarathustra (twice), Split Open and Melt, You Enjoy Myself, The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony, The Horse, Fluffhead Intro, Divided Sky Intro, Silent in the Morning, Reba, Fee, Kashmir Set I: Peaches en Regalia, Poor Heart > Split Open and Melt, Esther > The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony > Suzy Greenberg > Ya Mar, It's Ice, Fee, Possum Set II: Sample in a Jar, You Enjoy Myself, My Friend My Friend -> The Lizards, The Sloth, Fast Enough for You, Uncle Pen, Harry Hood, Highway to Hell Encore: Memories, Golgi Apparatus Show Notes: Possum included a Kashmir tease. Peaches (first since June 23, 1989, or 478 shows) was likely played in memory of Frank Zappa, who passed away a few weeks before. Subsequently, SOAM included Peaches teases. Ya Mar included an Auld Lang Syne tease and Hood included a Simpsons Signal. For the entire New Year's Run, the stage was set up as an aquarium, complete with sand, seaweed, rocks, and a giant clam.
If you really want to be amazed, check out this site. Look at their setlists from way back. They were doing lots of covers. ENJOY!!

Posted - 04/15/2002 : 9:30:08 PM very postive, the vocals are completally different, and if it is a live album, it must be a bootleg by some guy who doesn't know how to label correctly, it's not at all phish. hey Fluffy, what zappa covers do they do, i haven't heard of any of that.

yeah not many people know about that. I only found out when i started looking for guitar tab for it, and found a mesage on some site that siad they didn't play it.
Are you saying they have never played Gin and Juice at all? Because I am almost positive that they have that song on one of their live albums, I remember hearing it, but before I was a fan, so I didn't pay much attention.

Posted - 04/15/2002 : 4:32:38 PM I don't hate or despise Phish, I have seen them a couple of times, but being a huge ZAPPA fan caused me to be really bummed when I saw them play because they played so many ZAPPA cover, but I felt they played them badly. I can tell they are huge ZAPPA fans themselves, but I am a die-hard ZAPPA freak and their versions just weren't up to snuff, in my humble opinion.

Yeah any live phish is really good, especially any of the Gamehedge stuff(wilson, tela, pyite, llama, divided sky, lizards...etc..) i also am very surprised that not too many people on the board listen to phish...hope you check em out though!

Posted - 04/14/2002 : 9:15:37 PM The band knows so many songs...they're such a tightly knit band when they play...they just rock, I love them.

on another note phish doesn't play the bluegrass gin and juice version, that's just a napster mess up, the band that does that is called the gourds. On the original version(with snoop dog) there is a rapper named Phish, and somehow someone screwed it up and put phish for the band that plays the cover version...
I totally did not know that. Thanks.

alright thanks for the link there fluffy. But please note to everyone that hasn't heard phish, DON'T COMPARE THEM TO THE DEAD!!! phish IS my favorite band, and i can't stand the dead at all!! they sound nothing alike, other than the fact they both jam out songs and have a hippy following. sorry bout the outburst but...
No need for apologies, it's true.
I also think Phish are great. I'm a bit surprised there aren't more fans on this board. When I first started listening to phish I really have to say that I didn't like them. But after continual exposure I have really learned to like their music and appreciate just how good they really are. I couldn't stand Trey's voice at first, but now I like it, it's such a distinct, familiar sound to me. I think their earlier stuff is really their best.

Posted - 04/14/2002 : 3:13:40 PM I used to see Phish when they were just a bar band here in Burlington where they formed. It is interesting to see the evolution. I think a large part of their following fans in the beginning were Deadheads who needed a jam band between Dead tours. Then Jerry died and the Dead touring thing stopped and many of the people who spent all of their time following the Dead needed a similar band who jammed and performed live as much and in the same way as the Dead. It seems like this is one of the reasons Phish grew to be so famous so quickly after the Dead. Not so much in recording sales but in concert sell-outs. I also think Trey is highly influenced by Jerry's style of guitar, but he is an amazing musician of his own unique style as with the other members of the band. They are also highly influenced by jazz theories. Many people who live in Burlington moved here because the members of Phish live here. Their fans openly admit it. Many of them have told me they moved here hoping to see them frequently in the local clubs as spontaneous guests for other bands or themselves with names other than Phish. This rarely ever happens......

Posted - 04/14/2002 : 03:09:46 AM Phish is pretty rad... I've heard reviews of "Farmhouse" that it was a pretty uncool and bogus album, and true, Trey did steal the "Let it be" solo for his own on the title track, didn't list it as even an influence...but they still rock, very talented musicians, comparable to SCI, Dave, and the Dead...they're kind of a Dead of a new generation...kind of... I love listening to them, Trey has a unique voice...I saw him playing with Gov't Mule once and he is really a master of his style. Peace.

Posted - 04/14/2002 : 01:15:08 AM Phish was big right when I started college. (Yes, that's been years.) So I was into them cause my roommate was a partier or whatever and was into that stuff. And at the time I didn't care about music all that much. I'd listen to whatever. Phish, They Might Be Giants, 311, whatever, it didn't matter.
But yeah, Phish is good at what they do. They play to a certain type of crowd, and they're good at it. I'm no longer a part of that crowd, but some of their stuff is good. Matter of fact, I like it. So I guess I do still like Phish somewhat. They are creative.
I can play Waste, too, so I like them cause I can play one of their songs. But hey, I'm just an emerging star.
