I saw these posted in another thread and thought they should also be in the review of the show thread so I am reposting them here:
Ranting Thespian: quote: Posted - 09/17/2006 : 03:20:47 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You guys missed one hell of a night.
2 good things, though:
1- I got Tim's full performance on video 2- Madison Media Institute was also recording it for a DVD that will be put together (both sets, Tim's and the first one . . . I didn't have enough tape for both sets)
I am going to check out the video quality tomorrow and post a review. :)
wigrl79: quote: Posted - 09/17/2006 : 09:54:45 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have to say All Star Guitar Night was amazing!
The evening went so well and to the best of my knowledge TR, Fluffy and Rew thoroughly enjoyed their spread. ;) I had seen some pics of the purple flowers Fluffy had taken, so threw a few in their room for fun. Meeting the guys was such a great experience. They're all so fun and funny.
The show itself was stellar. The first set started with Muriel Anderson. She has won numerous awards for her guitar playing abilities and she's fantastic! Next we brought out Jack Grassl, also great guitar player. Third up was Stanley Jordan. This guy can play! The three of them played together, then brought Greg Koch to the stage. Greg is a funny guy on and off stage. He and the rest of his trio came out to play a few songs. Jon on drums and Tom on bass. They were so great, a little bluesy, little rock and roll. Muriel, Stanley, Jack and Greg and his trio finished out the set rocking together.
Second set was our man TR. It was amazing! I apologize in advance, you'll have to ask Fluffy or Ranting what he played. (I know I'm a terrible fan. But I'm also relatively new, so stick with me, I'll get it. :) ) Tim played for about an hour and then called out all the other artists. The crew played together for one last song and it was amazing! The different styles and sounds all coming together was so much to take in, I can't wait for the dvd to come out so I can hear it again. Also so I can see it from head on. Most of my viewing was from the side of the stage. :)
After the show all the artists went out in the lobby area to sign anything and everything people brought to them. Everyone was so gracious and kind to their fans. Tim stayed out and signed til everyone was done. I would personally like to thank Tim for being so kind and accomodating to all his fans.
Everybody...hate to say it, but if you weren't there you missed one hell of a show!
So glad I was able to have any part in it, and appreciate TR, Fluffy and Rew's amazing efforts!
PJK's response: quote: Awesome Mandy! Great review. I only have one problem with it, besides the fact that I couldn't be there, LOL, quote: (I know I'm a terrible fan. But I'm also relatively new, so stick with me, I'll get it. :) )
Ummm, Mandy, don't EVER think you are a terrible fan of TR's. There is no such thing here.....wait, thats a lie....that sneeker guy who always spams here, he is a terrible fan, but everyone else here is on equal ground. We are NOT a DMB site and in all fairness, I think hard core DMB fans get pretty sick of the "who is a true fan" topics too! If you enjoy his music, you're a fan, plan and simple, new fan, old fan, who really gives a shit, if ya love the music, you're a fan!
Your review was wonderful and very much appreciated by everyone here. I am so glad you got to see and meet TIM and know what an awesome musician and person he is. That to me is the really cool part, that he is an honest to goodness down to earth person. Nothing fake about him, what ya see is who he is. Again, congrats on a great show!
Peace always~
My review and the setlist shall follow when we arrive in Bloomington. I have to get ready to check-out of the hotel here in Madison. Thanx to Mandy, Aaron, Jon, Ali, Bruce, Brad and the entire staff for the benefit. The treated us so nice. Thanx to Muriel Anderson for inviting us and thanx to all the incredible musicians who participated in this exciting, amazing benefit. It truly was an "All Star Guitatar Night"! |

A great night. I got there around 5 and got a good parking space. Me and my friend Mark got out our guitars and just played. Pink Floyd songs, Beatles, DMB, Originals, and To Touch Yearning. We said hi to Rew when he came by. We went in to get confirmation for me to video tape. We then headed to the Diner across the street, of course the Crew was there. I said hi, fluffy reassured me about my filming. I bought the guys a Sprecker Root Beer (the best you will ever have, and it's from Millwaukee). We then got in, got a our seats, I set up my camera next to the soundboard. Mine looked puny compared to the other camera guy for Madison Media Institute (they are doing a charity dvd). I bought the Chaos View DVD, Parrallel Universe, and a Nomadic Wavelength Poster. I talked to Rew a bit, looked at the guitars being auctioned off . . . too bad I didn't have enough money to bid for the doubled cutaway faded special Gibson Les Paul. I met up with my uncle and aunt, got popcorn and a soda, and got my seat.
First Set:
The first set was amazing. Muriel Anderson came out with a lovely classical guitar. She played 2 great solo songs, fingerstyle. Then Jack Grassl came on and plugged in a very nice jazz hollow body guitar. Really smooth playing. He carried it on for a bit. Then Stanely Jordan came on, and this guy is amazing, he's a tap guitarist. I am thinking about e-mailing him Greg Howard's website. Then Greg Koch came on. He commented that he play solo guitar with the likes of the other 3 onstage . . . so he brought his band along from Milwaukee. They did some rocking good performance. He was pretty funny up there, as well as good. Eventualy everyone else started to join in on songs. Then to close the set, Greg and his band played a kewl jam that morphed into a strange Stairway (no lyrics) and ended with the Stairway outro.
Second set:
Muriel Anderson then introduced Tim as being a core for some of the more creative works with some band people might be familiar with . . . THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION . . . ok I lied, DMB. Tim came up and said, "the real inspiration for DMB was Steve Lillywhite . . . Dave Matthews." Nost many got the joke, I did ;) . He then started out with Hermetic Dew Drops, right into Jemez. Great song after song. Some Segued like Stream -> You Don't Know. or Jemez -> Che. His effects were right on, his playing was so clean, very talkative too. He got really sweaty too, saying it is much more humid in WI than the desert. He had a big towel right behind him he kept using. He played with his trusty D-35 and D12-28. He also had his great equaipment with him, including the new Aura. Somone did eventualy shout out "#41!" Tim replied with "666". I found the guy after the show, and talked to him about it, he is sorry ;) . At one point, Tim was changing his guitars, and was wondering what was wrong with his sound (I was giggling) . . . he forgot the plug his guitar in. It shows he is human, or at least a human/alien hybrid. An awesome version of Hold On by Issac Hayes was played, very very very good. He also explained that Chatterbox is dedicated to Josh (I think that's his name). Tim said when Josh was young, he used to talk all the time . . . and he is still talking. Now he says he's big, and smokes weed and plays video games . . . good for his mind, he said, lol! I also heard Doom for the first time (I'll be watching my TV for doom from now on). There is one song I didn't identify. It was Latin sounding with lots of slide. It could be off of Nomadic Wavelength, which is with a friend right now, so I can't check that. It's not on Stream, Gossip, See Into Your Soul, or Parrallel. I hope you guys or fluffy can clear that up.
Finale` :
Then Tim got everyone else onstage for one more number, but acording to Tim, George Bush couldn't make it, . It was a great night. I caught Tim's whole set on my camera, and decided to do it classy all in Black & White. My friend Mark opened the video and closed it . . . asking where the fuck his money is . . . I told him to say that.
After Show: I packed my stuff up, and waited in the Lobby. Tim came out relatively quick. It was mad in the lobby, though. There were so many people. Tim signed posters for the event, and then signed some of the guitars up for auction. Then he came back, signed my TR3 - Light Up Ahead cd, and brought along my fishman aura, which he signed. I then got a picture with Tim (who seems to like my Pink Floyd "the Wall" hat).
Video tape: The video I made is on 8mm. The sound quality came out great. I am going to make a master VHS copy, and then send the 8mm to John Semon II, who will edit it for a DVD.
Now, the night was done for Madison Media Institute (tech college) and they filmed it all, both sets, and I know ho mixed the sound. So they will be coming out with a DVD to buy. I will try to let you guys know when that is available. My copy will eventualy reach Fluffy, and probably go up on the site.
I hope you all can get to hear/see that amazing night. Here's Tim's setlist:
1- Hermetic Dew Drops --> 2- Jemez Rolling Waves --> 3- Che 4- Betrayel 5- Delicate Balance 6- Switch From 6 to 12 Guitar Loop 7- Flourescence -- 666 versus #41 8- And Then They Were Free 9- Stream --> 10- You Don't Know 11- Chatterbox 12- Switch from 12 to 6 --- Forgets to plug guitar back in 13- Hold On (Issac Hayes) 14- Doom 15- (unkown latin sounding song with slide) 16- All Star Bb Blues Jam (George Bush couldn't make it) |

First I'd like to thank Nick and Mandy for those awesome reviews. I love it when other folks review the show as their perspectives are alot fresher than mine. I don't know if you can imagine how hard it is to come up with new ways to describe TR's show nite after nite. Of course the unique ones are ez but someTIMes I feel like I don't do them justice. SomeTIMes I feel like I am just saying the same things over and over so it is refreshing to have other folks describe the show from their perspectives. Since they did such a great job I will just really be filling in the blanks. Hell, thats EZ!
So we arrived for an early load-in by our standards as there were so many acts to soundcheck after us. We arrived to great attitudes, big smiles from wonderful folks. You always know it's going to be a good nite when you are surrounded by such wonderful, professional, friendly folks, not to mention all the talent that was in that building. It wowed all of us. We soundchecked and retreated to our dressing room where I was welcomed by a bouquet of PURPLE, yes that's right, PURPLE flowers. THANX Mandy!(I got a picture hehe) We then headed across the street to Monty's Blue Plate Diner which had been recommended for dinner.(I highly recommend the Mac & Cheese!) There we ran into Nick and his friend who I am sorry to say I missed his name. I assured them I had arranged for them to get their video cameras in and they headed out to get in line.(By the way, Nick, THANX for the Root Beer, I really liked it. It would go great with the mac & cheese) While we were sitting there in the front window we could see the line forming under the marquee which we promptly noticed read:
Muriel Anderson's Allstar Guitatar Night Sat 8PM
It made us all laugh, so many guitar players and the word they spell wrong is guitar. I joked that maybe it was something like Steak TarTar. For those who don't know, steak tartar is raw meat, so I surmised that what they meant was a nite of raw guitar OR Guitatar. Bad joke, but of course there were many of them once we saw the mispelling.(Of course I got a picture) Then it was back to the venue to check out the other guitatar players and wait for TR's set TIMe.
I would also like to mention that this was a successful benefit concert for the Music for Life Alliance, which supports music education for disadvantaged children. For more information please check out the following link:
http://www.musicforlifealliance.com/ quote: Mission Statement: Music for Life Alliance seeks to unite individuals and organizations actively supporting music education for children who may not otherwise be able to experience the educational, psychological, and social benefits of making music; and to create and maintain a national database that enables the sharing of information, combining of resources, and speaking in a common and more effective voice.
TR was so happy to be asked to participate in such a worthwhile cause that he has always felt strongly about. He even donated his % of the proceeds from the DVD back to the organization. We hope they do well with it and raise alot of money for this worthwhile organization. Help out and buy the DVD when it comes out! It's worth the price whatever it ends up being just for the jam at the end, a song I have never heard TR play before.
Muriel was amazing and has that same since of dynamics that TR has although the songs she played were more classical guitar oriented. She gave us a copy of her newest CD and after reading the liner notes noticed that her most recent is the first with vocals after a long line of instrumental CD's. I thought this was pretty sychronistic as TR has kinda done the same thing with his new CD. What a coinkeedink! Next Jack came out and played a couple of songs solo on his big ole beautiful hollow body. He had really impressed TR at his soundcheck. They spent a bit of TIMe chatting about guitars among other things. Surprise suprise. Then Stanley took the stage and played a couple of solo instrumentals, one of which included a bit of Eleanor Rigby. It was quite beautiful. Next Greg took the stage with his band who would later back up TR and everyone for the encore JAM. We were at the bottom of the stairs jamming out to there medly of Zep riffs. Then everyone jammed Stevie Wonder's Superstitious which was a wonderful treat. I wish TR had been jamming on that one with them. I even joked with TR about running up during the Zep jam and grabbing Gregs other guitar and soloing a little. He just laughed and joked about not belonging on stage with folks that good. LOL
Before the show, Muriel had chatted with TR and during the course of the talk she asked if she could read her introduction of TR to him and make sure it was OK. Of course TR joked thru the whole thing with her shooting down all her compliments and told her to just introduce him as the crazy guy who can't play guitar. We also had her add our already legendary "...from absolutely NOWHERE...TIM REYNOLDS!"
After a brief break where they announced the winners of the auctioned guitars and posters and explained who the benefit was for and thanked all involved Muriel introduced TR. In the course of that introduction she mentioned that TR was the creative force(or something to that effect) behind so many of DMB's early albums. TR stood on the side of the stage laughing to himself and shaking his head and then took the stage and said that "Steve Lillywhite was the creative force behind those records...and of course Dave!" There was a small chuckle from the audience. I thought it was hilarious. A stellar set followed. Obviously Nick's setlist is probably more accurate than what follows, but here is how it appeared in front of TR:
Space, It's Whats for Dinner Jemez Che Betrayal Delicate -------------------------- Flourescence As Far Stream --------------------------- Chatter Wrong Way Home --------------------------- Hold On Doom --------------------------- Kundalini --------------------------- Oleo? House? Come Together
The last 3 were listed as the possible jams that TR would do with everyone. So we got to end of TR's set and he invited everyone back out to join him and there was a few moments of uncomfortable silence as everyone tried to decide what to play. Strangely, none of these professionals had thought to discuss it before they all went on stage so they were out there for a few looking at each other trying to decide what to do together. The ancipation was building as we all waited to see what would be decided. TR conversed with Greg for few seconds and it was decided, the jazz/blues standard "Oleo" which if TR remembers correctly is a Sonny Rollins tune. It was absolutely beautiful, much like TR and Marcus' All Blues in Santa Cruz, CA. If you remember, that was not recorded much to my dismay. Well this was and it should definitely see the light of day at some point. Stellar performances by all and TR had a great TIMe despite the heat and humidity. A funny side note about that, we had been joking about how it was just a tad hot in the dressing room but I assured TR that it was much kewler on stage as I had been up there watching the show a number of TIMes. Of course by TR's set TIMe, the place was full and now the upstairs was hotter than the downstairs. Hell, I was on the side of the stage and it was almost unbearable, I can't imagine how hot it was under the bright lites out on the stage. As Nick pointed out TR was sweating. I don't think I have every seen him sweat so much onstage and he had to towel off at every possible opportunity. I have seen him wet on stage before but never dripping as he played. It was intense the mood and the vibe allowed TR to rise above it and really enjoy himself. And we thought it was hot onstage at the Double Door in Chicago, only difference is Rew located a fan about 2 or 3 songs into the set there which literally saved TR's life for his set in Chicago. While we were in the dressing room in Madison we joked that "Well, at least it won't be as hot as it was in Chicago!" Boy were we wrong. So TR seemed quite happy with his set, he returned to the dressing room to excercise his elbow and ice it down and then out to the lobby to sign sign sign. We met the guy who shouted #41 as TR signed something for him. He apologized and said he was just caught up in the moment. TR laughed and told him it was OK. I also got a picture of TR signing Nick's Aura pedal. Another bizarre signature item. LOL I think the funniest thing TR signed all nite was a big Bud Light mirror that someone had won as part of the auction. They asked TR to sign it and after he signed it on the bottom I told him he should write "Don't Drink..." right above the word Bud. He did. A few minutes later someone else came up with another one and asked TR to sign it and this TIMe he signed "Bud Light" mirror at the bottom and then wrote "Smoke" on the top. You figure it out. LOL Sorry, I didn't get a picture of those.
So once again THANX to all who made this benefit happen and allowed us to be a small part of it. Thanx to the crew who took wonderful care of us and all the professionals who did an amazing job of running a smooth and enjoyable show. KUDOS TO ALL OF YOU!! |

Glad you liked it Robin. I had to laugh myself because as I said all that I found this to be longest review by me in a while. LOL I guess alot more happened that nite than happens at a usual TR gig. Anyway, for those who want to find out more about OLEO, check out this link:
http://www.songtrellis.com/sounds/viewer$1240
This shows it as a Sonny Rollins composition that has also been recorded by Miles Davis. Guessing it's probably been covered by alot of jazz greats. |

Tim played Oleo? That's great! I'm going to have to hear that. One of my favorites to play and I have a great version of Eric Dolphy doing it on Bass Clarinet. I'll definitely be interested to hear his take on it. Thanks for the info. |

Only a short bit was Hermetic Dew Drops. Just the opening, then Jemez kicked in. I just listened to my tape and Gossip, and though they are different (being improv and all) they had the same key elements, so I say Hemetic. I am also 100% sure Stream went into You Don't Know . . . because Tim started Singing it, lol. Also, all I heard from the stage at the end Jam was someone saying key of Bb, then the jam came in.
Anyways, reviewing what Fluffy has, this is the new edited, and most likely 100% accurate:
0-- . . . Stairway To Roswel . . . 1-- Hermetic Dew Drops --> 2-- Jemez Rolling Waves --> 3-- Che 4-- Betrayel 5-- Delicate Balance 6-- Switch From 6 to 12 Guitar Loop 7-- Flourescence --- 666 versus #41 8-- As Far 9-- Stream --> 10- You Don't Know (solo acoustic, no effects) 11- Chatterbox 12- Switch from 12 to 6 guitar Loop --- Forgets to plug guitar back in 13- Hold On (Issac Hayes) 14- Doom (while watching for ~pigs on the wing~) 15- Kundalini 16- All Star Oleo Jam (In Bb) (George Bush couldn't make it, oh darn)
~ = when you see the video, you'll know why. |

I doubt Tim played Chatterbox on the 12 string, and a re-visitation of Hermetic Dew Drops? It can't be! Arthen will swoon. |

I bleeped up. Tim changes to a 6 after You Don't Know, then back to a 12. Also, I still think the intro sounds like Hemetic Dew Drops. Like I said, they are both improv, the thing is that they share the same basics. Also, I said it was only the begining of Hemetic, with the swells and such, then Tim broke into Jemez. |

I asked TR about this and he said some of the notes are definitely the same as in HDD. He says he uses them quite often in those little intro noises pieces. Kudos on recognizing them! |
