I saw her the last time she played at the Tin Angel. Watch out for parking fees! yiiikes! She was funny, though. A much more lellow, laid-back set than I expected, but she is a good guitarist. |

Just discovered I missed her at Jammin Java here in Vienna, VA on thursday while I was working Queen/Paul Rodgers. To add insult to injury I hear Devon was playing with her. What a great double bill.

Devon was with her too. That was the first I have heard of her. She played some funky little jazz tunes that were pretty cool. She surpassed my expectations. I didnt have any if that makes sense. Both lovely ladies performed excellently. They were both so nice. We were joking around and thinking about Tim playing that venue. It is very small and narrow. We were laughing at the thought of the ceiling tiles falling down if he played. He would rip that place up. Good time sorry you missed out. Maybe next time. |

Yes, the Tin Angel is awesome, talk about a listeners room. I have done a few acts there (Chris Whitley a bunch of TIMes and Keren Ann) and have always thought it would be a great room for TR. It's just so small. There would be alot of folks left out because I think it would sell out so fast. Don't know if alot of you remember this or if you are to new to the board you may not have known, but Devon did a TouR with us way back when. There are pictures posted on the photos page I think. We had a great TIMe with her on the road. As did Kaki and we had a great TIMe with her as well. I think Kaki did a leg of the ChaosView TouR, because I remember Mason being with us on that one.
A small sidenote: While we were on the TouR with Devon I took alot of pics. On a day off we all went on a TouR of a submarine and took lots of groovy pics. One of those pics I took ended up as the cover of Devon's next CD, "Long Sleeve Story":
and a review of that CD. There should be alot of names you recognize in there.
devon long sleeve story Three Word Records by Scott Snidow
Sexy, sultry and cerebral.
Rarely do you hear those three words used together. But somehow, those were the adjectives that kept running through my brain as I listened to long sleeve story, the latest offering by the avante garde folkstress devon. Actually, my brain was assaulted with adjectives as each track unfolded a new feel, and invariably a new sound, but it seemed that those three kept rearing their heads time after time.
For her sophomore offering, this Charlottesville, VA native has assembled quite an enviable collection of songs and talent. Produced by fellow Charlottesvillian Stefan Lessard, who many of you know as the bassist in the Dave Matthews Band, long sleeve story is a departure in both sound and content from devon's first self-titled CD. The differences between these two albums are comparable to Bob Dylan's first five albums and Highway 61 Revisited. long sleeve story contains an edgier, more electric and eclectic sound than anything devon has done before. There is a depth, a maturity, and an attitude that permeates each track of this album that only a come of age road wise musician could ever accomplish. It appears that her stints as a side stage performer with the DMB has wizened her beyond her years and boosted her self-confidence in her craft and her talents.
Oh...did I mention that devon is only 18 years old? Yeah, at an age when many of her contemporaries are producing bubble gum encrusted, techno drenched, wannabe trendy boy/girl band hip pop crap, devon has set her sights for a loftier, much more mature sound. A sound that is completely and totally her own. No concessions. No compromise.
The cast of musicians that joined devon and Lessard in the making of this album included some of the best that Charlottesville has to offer. There's Nate Brown (Everything, Gibb Droll) on drums and Dave Saull (Hate Holiday, The Crosstops) on bass. Rounding out the lot, and a choice that boosted my already healthy respect for devon, is legendary jazz trumpeter John D'earth (Miles Davis, DMB, Bruce Hornsby), who provides some extremely cool and memorable moments on this album. (One that instantly comes to mind is the 1920's sounding trumpet playing that he provides on "Let Me In On It.")
If you are looking for some sort of audio barometer as to what long sleeve story sounds like, or is similar to, then I am hard pressed for an answer. It is bold, and very unique in both musical and lyrical quality. It is edgy, and filled with enough attitude to make Alanis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill sound more akin to a Disney soundtrack than the anthem of angst that it was once heralded as. Lyrically, devon can turn quite a phrase. Musically, she can paint quite the picture. On this album, devon has a little something for everyone, from slow ballads to hard-edged rockers and virtually everything in between. One track, "Fast Statue," a beautiful piano based ballad, does sound a like it could easily find a home on a Fiona Apple album, but that is the only track that brought anyone else to mind as I listened to this CD. However, for those of you who have to have some comparison to gauge a new artist by, suffice it to say that if you like Jane Siberry, Fiona Apple, or Tori Amos, then devon will certainly find a comfortable home in your CD collection.
There is no doubt that devon is poised on the edge of musical stardom, and long sleeve story quite possibly could be the album that pushes her over the top. There is an integrity and artistry on this album that is shockingly refreshing in this day and age, especially from one so young in years. It can only be described as sexy, sultry, and oh so pleasantly cerebral.
devon is waiting to tell you a long sleeve story. All that you need do is type in www.devonmusic.com in the address window of your browser.
