So I was flipping the channels a couple of minutes ago and I came across David Letterman's show. And Kaki King was playing. Has anyone heard of her? She's amazing. I really liked her unusual style of playing (reaching over the top of the fret board with her hand instead of going underneath and coming up). Anyway, I was just wondering if she's been around for a while or is brand new. |

Hey pcbTIM, Kaki has been around for quite a while. She has only been gaining popularity and noteriety in the last few years. I guess it must have happened during your absence from the board but Kaki did a TouR as TR's opening act. It was a really great bunch of shows. She is a inovative guitar player, fantastic performer and all-around wonderful person. I get glimpes of a particular period of King Crimson from some of her songs. Wish I had seen the David Letterman. Glad you got to enjoy it. Good to see you posting again and missed you in CA on the past run of shows!
posted by me in Aug '03 when talking about the Sept '03 run of shows: quote: As for opening acts, looks as though Kaki King will be joining us for Sept 10th-19th and possibly some shows beyond that. Kaki is playing at the 9:30 Club very soon with Angelique Kidjo and I am hoping to check her out so and meet her so I will know what we can expect from her. I have heard her CD and found it quite interesting and enjoyable, I highly recommend it. There is alot of "tapping"(don't know if this is the right word or not) on it and moments that remind me of Fripp or King Crimson style-wise even though it is a solo acoustic CD. Her style seems quite different from TR's, so it should make for an inTeResting evening of geeTaR. Check it out if you get a chance, should be a great opener based on what I have heard so far.

Definitely missed that! Thanks Fluffy. It's a little late to ask for one of her CDs for a Christmas present, but definitelt early enough for a birthday present. On a side note, I read some of the reviews of her CDs on Amazon and found it strange that not one of the reviews or links to similar music mentioned TR. |

Hey PcbTim, I saw Kaki at the Tin Angel Cafe on South St. in Philly 2 weeks ago. She is awesome, I think I posted a thread about her a few months ago on here. She is playing 3 more shows there in January. And her new album, Legs to Make Us Longer, is a real masterpiece.

Maybe it is, and maybe it isn't. |

Teri you are too much. Thanks for the surprise gift. I can honestly say that I never expected it. I will definitely give this CD a listen. If you want to laugh about something, when I was explaining who you were to my mom (because she wanted to know where it came from), the first question she asked was how old you were. Hahahaha. I don't know if she was looking out for me or was thinking that you were a prospect, but either way it's funny to think about. Have a great Christmas and now I'm going to have to find something for you. Thanks a million. Haha......I still can't believe that you sent me something. |

Following Tericee's lead at reviving old threads for new news, I came across this story today about Kaki King:
http://www.jambase.com/headsup.asp?storyID=8710
You know that "small world" I always talk about, well I just sent a message to Kaki thru Ani DiFranco. I worked for Ms. DiFranco the other day and saw that Kaki was opening for her in a week or so. I told everyone to tell Kaki HI for me and then today I was posting on Jambase.com and saw the above story. Well it turns out that Jason Hart was the keyboard player for Keren Ann, the artist I have been working for off and on for the last couple of years. It was Jason who introduced me to the guitar player from The Machine on one of his solo shows I worked when Jason opened for Marillion. Subsequently I went to europe with The Machine and it looks like I am going back with them in Dec. Well, now I am rambling and probably noone cares about any of this but me. LOL I am just always amazed how many people I work with end up working with each other and so on and so forth. Of all the keyboard players, whudda thunk it?! |

Fluffy about this small world you always speak of ...
I played a festival with Kaki actually, got a chance to hang with her for a bit and that was it...but then Hopeful Rolling Waves and I got a chance to see her again in Philly and this girl Devon opened for her. Devon ended up being a friend of a friend who my buddy recorded in his house when we stayed down in Charlottsville, she was AMAZING. So anyway, I guess she has been on tour with Kaki a lot this past tour. Once again, Charlottsville, the brewer of amazing talent. |

Yes, I remember we discussed that in the following thread:
http://www.timreynolds.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6670
Speaking of Joe, I saw him about a week ago and passed off some of Marcus Eaton's CD's to him. Luckily he is going to be on a break from DMB and back at home when TR plays in C-ville. He says he is going to come to the show. I hope he makes it. |

I first read about Kaki King in Guitar World Acoustic a while back. Then I caught her the first time she was on Letterman (this performance you saw must have been her second). I like her a lot. Also, I think I have never heard an Ovation guitar sound so good. |
