OK, today at lunch, I was talking to same guys, and they were comparing guitarists "who would win in a 'guitar-off'". They go down the list, like Steve Vai, Slash, etc. those kind of guys...so their 3rd 'guitar-off' was "Tim Reynolds or Micheal Angelo" (or it's just Michaelangelo, I don't know). And they unanimously said this Michael Angelo guy. I could't protest, because I didn't know anything about this guy. Now, do any of you? Do these kids not know what they're talking about or is this guy really good?

I have heard of this guy but never any of his music. I think he's got that one-word name Renaissance thing going on. |

Michael Angelo ( Michael Batio) is a shred guitarist who does stunt work with double- and quadruple-necked guitars. Not the kind that normally comes to mind, though. One neck goes to the right, and one to the left. he plays each neck with the corresponding hand, usually in harmonies or doubling the same high-speed riff. Imagine a guitar being played like a chapman stick, with string dampeners to get a clear sound. when he plays conventionally, he is one of the fastest known players on the planet. The lesson that Michael Angelo's music teaches us is that speed does not always make a song good, or a guitar solo good. His music, while mind-bendingdly fast, doesnt offer much in the way of aesthetic pleasure ( at least from what I have heard, and also read about his other material). It seems more like a circus act ( to see a guy playing a double-jointed {for lack of better term} guitar with oen hand per each neck, and also just to see the fingers and arms fly that fast. He also plays solos with the left hand over top of the neck ( with no picking hand) more quickly than most of us can play in conventional position, *with* a picking hand. It really is an exciting thing to see and know about, and perhaps he would astound people more than Tim would in a thirty-second showdown, but over the long run of an entire composition, or catalog of works, TIM takes the cake. This is somethign I have noticed as I have checked out the mega-guitarists like Vai, Satriani, etc., and compared them with TIM. I can sit and listen to TIM's music over and over, running down the list of just about every song he has recorded, cos they all have good tasteful quality, not just useless speed shredding. I'm sure you all agree that TIM's music has more quality content than just about any guy or girl in that guitar-off. JMO. |

When talking about amazingly great guitarists and what classifies as such, you have to take into consideration the entire instrument. For me, it is mainly how well they can play on an electric and acoustic. That's why Tim is number one for me, because he can do amazing things on both electric and acoustic. |

Personally I have never seen a guitarist who could use so many techniques so fluently while at the same time having such a unique and full musical knowledge. Tim not only has mind blowing technique but he can truely move me with the beauty of his playing. Tim plays so many different styles as well from jazz (whatever that may be) to classical and rock and all the fusions in between. Personally I feel Tim is quite possibly the greatest guitarist ever just because of the fact that he can play everything. He also has such a great command over the effects and orchestrates them so well. Anway I'm rambling on so for the last thing is that he can improvise like a crazy mother. |

OK, here's another guitarist, Monte Montgomery, he is really amazing great guitarist, and my cousin insists that he is the GREATEST, and even the greatest guitar players in the world "would beg to eat his crap, just because of how good he is". He IS really good, but, I don't know...

Im not going to get into a whos better thing because its absolutely pointless and silly but i would think that tr fans would definetly enjoy some of shawn lanes work. Im sure anything shawns done with jonas helborg would appeal to folks here. As far as alist of great guitarists goes, you guys are missing a whole genre of the best guitarists around. I mean monte montgomery? cmon hes ok but the best? pleeeeeeeese. ever hear pat metheny? wayne krantz? mike stern? barry green? tuck andress? martin taylor? jimmy herring? hell i played a gig last night with a guy who pipes everyone mentioned on this thread except tim. Open your ears. |

I dunno...I still have yet to hear anyone who can play acoustic scales as quickly and cleanly as Al DiMeola....he's just plain sick. You all should download Mediterranean Sundance...try to get the one with him, paco de lucia, and john mclaughlin...it blows my mind every time I listen to it |

Hellborg, sipe and lane, badass shit...the guitarist reminds me of a bluesier/jammier version of satch, kind of has that same tone or a similar. i love that group tho! i have heard stern, herring, metheny, and all of those guys are incredible musicians!
anyway, music is good, i like it! |

lol, Martin Taylor, nice name huh and he dosent play either.Hes a British guy who plays mostly solo jazz stuff. absolutely incredible player, unbelievable chops. As for Al Dimeola, sure hes fast, although there are alot of guys faster, but to me, that doesent mean much anymore. Hell i can play fast, real fast, but it dosent make me the best or anywhere near the best. Imho, the key is to make music. Some guys can make music while playing fast, some guys can make music playing slow, then there are some guys who dont make very much music either way. I hate to bust on Al cause I loved him many years back, but he has a tendency to fall into latter category quite often. |
